| Morning everyone I hope you are all well and have toilet roll. I'm having a well ornded holiday and have been making my breakfast off porridge in my Andveture HQ (it's my shed with log burner and radio in it's where I plan my motorcycle trips and just relax), so as I cooked I started to think how great it would be if I could run the cb and a light and possibly a phone charger from Sola power so I won't need an extension cord and just for the fun off being off grid, it's as close to a cabin in the woods I'll get. Is it possible would it be really expensive. Thanks 26-ct3339 Andy Darlington. | |

| If you use a battery it wouldn't be. You would need to use a leisure battery as they're designed to not be damaged by being deep discharged whereas a car battery is damaged if the voltage drops below 11.6V.
You then just need one of those cheap solar panel trickle chargers you can get for caravans. Use that to charge up the battery. For the phone use a 12V car charger rather than using a mains inverter and a plug in mains charger.
A 110Ah leisure battery would give you easily a week of continuous use on a normal transmit/receive cycle running a CB at 4W.
Upside is if your usage ever exceeds the solar panel capacity to recharge the battery you can pop the battery in the house and use a battery charger overnight to replenish it.
Depending on funds, when it comes to the solar panel you could splash out and get a 30W, 12V caravan solar panel kit which would be able to run a rig on its own without the battery during peak output. So with a leisure battery and a 30W panel you could do it under £150-£160. | |
