Hi all, greetings from sunny Yorkshire. Now the pubs are all closed I have a surplus of time/money that needs redirection, so what a good chance to relight the old radio bug that has been dormant for many years. I haven't been on-air for 20/30 years (maybe longer, my memory is shafted) when I had a very tidy Stalker 9FDX and enjoyed both sides of the hobby, meaning UK FM and the 11m SSB DX. Never been into Ham but the older I get the more it appeals, so maybe one day...
Fast-forward to about 2016 (based on email history, NOT memory) and I thought it would be fun to put a radio in my camper van, so picked up a brand new Grant II and a Tank Whip for static use in whichever pub carpark would have me. I went for the Grant to keep my 10m options open if I ever do get a licence, but realistically I was hoping to find the UK/EU activity would be high enough to justify the leap-in-the dark of shelling out on the new kit.
Major disappointment all round, barely anything to hear at all, let alone have a talk back at, lol. Not that I gave it a grand attempt to be fair, the old camper van hardly ever came out to play and the radio only got an hour or two of attention for a couple of times a year. At this stage, the most fun I've had with the radio is modding it for full coverage, not actually comunicating with anyone, lol.
Jump forward again and the camper is sold-on, and the radio is back in the box. I'm going to set it up in the garage and try to give it a better shot this time, as a base station instead. The tank whip can stay on the shelf though, we'll try to improve on that. Wish me luck...

Hey cheers Gary, Steve, Kev, John. A good mix of Norf n Sarf there. I might make Leeds to Grimsby on a good clear night, we'll have to give it a bash when the antenna goes up. Should be here tomorra but I have to figure out the mounting pole yet. Ciao!
