Subject: Unable to get SWR under ten???? Wed Apr 22, 2020 6:08 pm
Baffled guys, President Grant 2 feeding a magmount base on a steel plate in front of my window, OR same President Grant 2 using Mag mount or Direct roof mount on my van roof. Click Forward, Adjust down to SET /Infinity line. Click switch into REFLECT SWR stays on near as dammit 10 . tried using different antenna but SWR does not vary. tried adjusting antenna length, still no variation. I'm totally baffled. Can a Mag mount be defective??

Hi Bill, Could be your mag mount. Where the coax goes into the mag mount, there might be a loose connection there. Is it possible to check the soldering under the mag mount? Might not be possible to visibly check because of plastic / rubber covering and don't suggest you break into that.
Another possible cause could be a faulty patch lead. You might be using at least 2 in your set up. I've had 'dodgey' connections w.r.t soldering inside the PL259 plug, especially if the leads are old and have had lots of use.
Not familiar with you rig and it's SWR controls. Have you got a dummy load? I've found them useful for checking the power output of a rig, and the state of patch leads and power output of rig.
If using a 50 Ohm dummy load and a SWR meter, if you get a 1:1 (ideally) SWR, then at least you know your rig's controls and patch leads are working ok, then the fault must be with magmount and / or antenna.
All the best,
Gary

Thanks Gary I'll take a look at the mag mount etc, I may also just knock up another patch lead. Cheers.

Hi Bill ,I answered you in the other post you done on this subject and you gave me my in this thread , OK first what is roof if the van made from because if it aluminium it wont SWR,aluminium seems to interfier alot of Land Rover owners get this problem, also even though if it's made of steel it might have a plastic coating in the roof and that causes problems too I have seen this happening on certain modern cars ,other than that it could be like what the other poster said, but it does seem strange that you have tried numerous antenna as you said in your other thread.
