I ve still got my 500 channel scanner wired up on the radio desk but hardly ever turn it on. Other than aircraft around 118-127 Mhz there is very little left on FM these days.

Shame really as i had a Realistic handheld scanner back in the 80's and you could pick up all sorts of local com. Guess its all gone digital now. :-(

I've just bought a yupiteru mvt7100 , had one years ago and loved it , this one has a problem with the keyboard, some of the buttons don't work regardless of how hard I press them , after I come back from holiday I'll be having it looked at

There are still people using old-fashioned cordless telephones on frequencies around 31.085 - 31.210 but it "may be" illegal to listen to them :-/

There are, it is illegal to listen, and it is even more illegal to fire up your widebanded HF/VHF rig and tell them you are from MI5 and monitoring them!

I've still got an Alinco DJ-X3 handheld am/fm scanner which comes out every now and then. It used to be our main source of entertainment, back in the day, when it was cr*p on the telly (which, to be honest, was most nights). We're under the approach to Bristol Airport so I pick up overhead aircraft clear as a bell, and the tower too (not so clear). I've recently bought a scanner antenna to see if it would improve things but, so far, it hasn't seemed to make any difference from the Watson Whip antenna I usually use. Sad

@Victor Alpha 10. Yes it’s a shame it’s all gone digital but more of a shame that a lot of things are encrypted, but understand why some had to...like the police, I still loved listening to my local India 99 helicopter and police 😬

Everning All.

CT3533 here (Airfixpilot)

I was trawling through radio You Tube videos a few weeks back, when I came across one called, Radio Scanning - Is There Anything Left To Listen To??. It was a interesting video were it went through ALL the bands, and were to find activity. When the emergency services went over to Tetra, except for airband, most scanner users thought there was nothing to listen to. This is far from the truth, if you know were to look.

My hobby in aviation means I listen to both Military and Civil aircraft, over the UK and north sea. I also listen to PMR radio and other stuff. It is best NOT to tell anyone what you listen to, due its a bit of a frowned upon hobby. There is forums for this hobby, including Transmission 1.

The equipment I use is Two Icoms (R5 & R6) and a Uniden UBC125 XLT. All have airband Watson 901 antennas, and Nagoya 771 for PMR ect. Books to read is the scanning directory, (although out of date, It will give you a good steer) and theUnited kingdom Airband frequency Guide. (UKAFG 2020).

I do use a spreadsheet for all My frequencies, so I can look up in a instant, which frequency belongs to who/what.

Any questions welcome.

Regards CT3533

I think that I am pretty lucky regarding monitoring my BCT15X I have in a 10 mile radius off my chimney mounted discone - Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Pubwatch , Shopwatch, Blackpool Zoo , Taxis with private radios ,The Wintergardens , Blackpool Tower , The council , The Hospital .BAE Warton , Manchester Airport , Liverpool Airport . Alas not Blackpool Airport . Balfour Beatty closed that down and ran away , Blackpool Council own the land now but there was talk of a partial Commercial Use again !

I got a load of frequency for Anglesey if you want them, very active when i lived there last year.
Think i posted them on Transmission 1.
I use my RD-5R for scanning and crack a lot of DMR , colour codes and Slot 1 or 2.
Live in Stone, Staffordshire now so building up a list around here.
Waiting for a new SDR box to land so can find the activity quicker.
Today i heard loads of Eastern European on PMR1, i think its the migrant worker teams in the Stafford area, thousands of them, i see them every day in local supermarket buying food supplies. They come in daily on coaches from somewhere.
The radios they using very powerful, i could hear them for 8 miles clear down the A34.

I cannot get much from home, but if I park up at my local dx spot, I hear lots of activity on 2m, 70cm and pmr. Lots of radio traffic from Manchester Airport as I am looking down on it, so I get all the ATC, plus all the peripheral stuff, like baggage handlers etc. Can be entertaining at times.

I been listening to the fire brigade round here. Between 450 and 460 , DMR also.
Couple incidents got my interest but not going to repeat details but a monitor come on band ordering the fire fighters on scene not to record anything on smartphones or to discuss the matter. Gag order basically. Who ever it was wasn't the fire crew or command on site.
Didn't see a thing in local press.

Hi 👋🏻
I listen to the pmr that seems to be picking up in usage in our area, marine band and a couple of ham
repeaters and the air band should come back to life once we get planes flying back to Bristol airport.

In all I always tend to be able to find something going on!

A couple of the holiday parks on the Yorkshire coast are still on FM but if it wasn't for the marine band it would be very quiet. Even the local amateur repeaters and simplex channels are dead most of the time. There seems to be more activity on 11m which is why I've just recently joined the forum after being a ham for nearly 50 years!

Hello and welcome, Ed. I hope you are enjoying the forum?

I notice this is your first post. If you would like a call-sign, you need to make a post in the 'introductions' section of the forum and formally request one. Then Gary (who issues the call-signs) will give you a call-sign.

If you need any help, just drop me a pm.👍

FM is alive here, 440 to 470 and lower in 430 to 438 many shops and cafe driving schools use radio now, most shops you now see a radio on the shop worker , good to listen to, Finland has got digi service for shops but the cost is very much more, so they opt for normal FM, and some even use normal PMR, i use a ubc 125xlt and for digi it is the whistler trx 1e.

There has been a noticeable increase in small businesses close to me using PMR radios just recently I notice, I was out with the dog and a little radio and caught a chap on the ground guiding a crane driver with one in addition to the same sort of businesses as previously mentioned cafes, bars, motorcycle driving school and a garden centre to name but a few.

As I live near docks for the refinery a few miles away I can hear the ships come in on the marine channels, once in the dock, they switch to 446.200 and 442.600 and you will hear the refinery staff speaking to the ships regarding loading the cargo of several thousand tons of fuel and their varied abilities to get the cargos loaded with different capabilities pumps and filters which often seem to break down and need to be fixed at all hours of day and night.
