| I have recently got back to the 11m CB band after 35 years or so and the QRM I seem to have is at times a plus 9!.... I am fully aware lots of QRM nowadays is caused by wireless extenders and alike but even with all power off running the rig from a battery it still remains. This started to train my thoughts on a nearby comms tower which could have phone internet and alike being broadcast from it and it also has a beacon on the very top which when you listen closely it coincides with a bleep of sorts that can be heard through all the bands from the 25mhz right up to 28 MHz and beyond. The reason for this post is to find out if anybody else has the same kind of thing or are in a similar situation ? I look forward to any replies on the subject

| To answer your question Kev YES mate it could do, sorry it's not a long winded technical answer but this type of question has been asked so many times Kev and everyone now just accepts the interference we get now on radio because of modern technology, its not how it was in the old days of CB and Amateur radio when we didnt have all this WiFi and mobile phones and other stuff it use to be the other way around we got accused CB that is of interfering with every from T.Vs to the electric kettle not working LOL , your going to get answers from some on here all technical try this and that and telling you to buy expensive filter equipment but TBH mate it wont stop interference 100%its just the modern times. | |

| Most of the QRM people get is from noise sources in the home or in a neighbour's. There might be something on the mast, but nearly everything on it is going to be VHF and higher in frequency. There are still some 26/27MHz pagers around but there can't be many.
The usual advice is to switch off everything else in the house in turn and see what effect this has - especially anything with a plug-in-the-wall power supply or charger. I have a couple of very noisy phone chargers, and a monitor that spews out lots of junk. Those I can do something about. There are a couple of other noise sources in neighbours' places that I can't do much about - but a QRM eliminator gets rid of most of it. I moved the antenna as far away from the house as possible. RF chokes on the coax at both the antenna and coming into the shack, and I am going to build a mains lead filter for the radio PSE. All the things I've done already got my noise level down from S9 to around S3, which is fine if there is any DX propagation about.

| Thanks for your replies Nubster and you are from my old area I was a North London lad back in the day and yep I did all ready know the answer but no harm in getting others opinions. Thank you 26TC62 ive all ready done the power off job and run rigs on a big Van battery. The RF choke idea might be worth a go but there is not a thing I can do about a 150ft or so phone mast this I will just have to grin and bear which is a shame as my antenna is 80ft away from my house and 11m to base of antenna with RG213 mil grade cable and I know back before we had all this WI FI crap it would be good. Like you say back then we used to cause TVI etc to home owners now the tables have turned in a big way a bloody shame . 73s Kev never old just experienced | |

I grew up in Waltham Cross my aunt lived in a tower block near the spurs ground you could watch them with a pair of binoculars LOL that has long since been demolished. I also used to go to Hackney Speedway on a Friday night for many years with my good old Dad god bless him a part of London that has changed beyond recognition now we had some bloody good times over there.

| I have got an update on my QRM after isolating all what I thought was causing or could be causing my QRM things like WI FI extenders Routers and alike it still remained until I decided to switch off the whole lot and to my amazement the QRM had now gone it turned out my motorbike trickle charger was causing it powered from the shed feed the rest of the house was fine. The charger is one of those fancy slow charge things so if anyone owns a motorbike and has one of those try turning it off is my suggestion. Like I said all the obvious stuff like WI FI extenders and such which I have 2 off and 2 google homes one in shed too and various wi fi switches for lighting and it came down to a battery charger which I never even considered just goes to show. So now I can lay my rg213 to my office in the Knowledge I wont be listening to plus 9 of noise and a bleeping sound Happy Days ! 73s Kev

Gotta laugh Battery chargers and SMPSU’s in everything from phone chargers to kitchen appliances are the spawn of the devil. Did the same here and ended up replacing a heap of LED ceiling lights, binning power bricks and ferriting a heap of other stuff. Now it’s just the neighbours crap....in a power outage my noise goes to S1! You two are making me bloody homesick too......born a Londoner, lived over half my life in Enfield, then moved up North with the now wife, before coming here to Aus almost 15 years ago. I don’t reckon I’d recognise much of North London now if we came back.

Well, I'm 51 now, and lived there since birth until 1999 when we moved up North. Moved here to Aus in 2006. I don't reckon I'd recognise much of any UK town or city now, as I haven't been back in over 10 years. Still remember going to Spurs games when all the barriers were up and the violence was at it's peak!

| Hi Jeff
It has also been sometime I lived back there in 1998 I moved to where I am now and have been back now and then even in those years a lot has changed nothing like I remember when I was a lad riding my bike up and down the river Lea that seems a long time ago now time fly's there is no doubt about it. On the topic of lights and QRM I am grateful I am not having that issue as well and my neighbours gear is all good is a big plus for sure. This Radio lark is costing a fair bit of cash and sodding about but it keeps me away from the Mrs LOL she better not read this or I be living in my shed hahaha.

| @Kev, concerning CB Radio initially was supposed to be a cheap radio communication for the general public that started in the U.S it's become a expensive hobby TBH LoL. @Jeff I use to live not far from the Spurs ground when I was I kid, and I can remember the barriers and all standing on the terraces and the fights too the Spurs fans behind the goal at the Park Lane end ,wouldn't it be funny if we three all knew each other from old days, betting keep on subject as for LED lights dont have them in my house but I think my neighbor does plus I'm surrounded by houses so I get whatever crap interference there putting out. | |

| Hi Nubster yes I do remember Skyriders and it would of been late 79 80s I did also get a FM rig when it was legalised in 81 and was on for quite a few years even kept it when I started driving in my MK 3 Cortina until some toe rag stole it one night and left all the doors open. after that I decided to call it a day until now but now its more of a pastime and hobby I liked the engineering challenge of making a hinged antenna mount from thick 1/2 steel plate and creating a big hinge with 2 4 meter scaffold poles and a aluminium section of 3 meters then antenna on top with a winding mechanism fitted to the side of my workshop which kinda looks like a mine pit head gear LOL ohh and its all earth bonded might make a big bang if lightning hits it but its straight to earth with 10mm earth cable and copper earth spike a meter into ground. The fun is in the doing I have still got to get the RG213 to the office in house for winter time best of both worlds LOL the bloody things ive done in this lockdown situation has been crazy I was keeping all these jobs for when I had packed work in now I need to get something else for then LOL gotta laugh for sure. | |

| I bet we spoke at some point Kev on the radio then if you was on around that time on AM and FM, I started about 1975 early 76 with my cousin Barry we chipped in got the radio between us , if I can remember some handles from back then I'll post them see if you recognise any, if you want 213 theres a lot of sellers on ebay but some you have to be careful with cos they sell cheap crap stuff , theres Knights a proper CB shop I would go for http://www.kcb.co.uk at least you know it's good stuff or any of the Amateur shops on line would sell it too ,when it comes to buying coax its always best to get the best stuff you can afford TBH | |
