I bet the complainer is dissapointed by that responce, how would they know this individual runs a 400w linear on the C.B. anyway? Sounds like a case of sour grapes to me, this individual is breaking the rules and I am telling, what are you going to do about it? I wonder if these tell-tales would be so fast to complain if they had to give their name along with the complaints, somehow I doubt it very much!

The signal strength measured by OFCOM's remote monitoring network they can use from the comfort of their desk at Baldock. It's not like amateur radio where antennas with 10dB actual real world gains are possible thus making it much harder to decide whether a foundation is running 10W or 100W or a full licence is running 400W or 1.5kW without a site visit.
You will never ever see 20dB gain in any CB antenna ever which would be needed to give a comparable ERP and signal strength to someone using a 400W linear in a typical installation.

Better watch out I hear they have especially modified detector vans that can tell if you are using an antenna with to much gain so your ERP is over the limit too! :*

I didn't think anybody still fell for the "We are watching you" propaganda any more, "the vans are in your area" and we can see what you are doing form our desks in Baldock, start using just one watt over the limit and WE WILL KNOW!

I remember the RA bringing round a TV detector van to a ham rally many years ago. I also remember whist the minders were distracted some folk moving the BNC's around on the back of the kit.

OFCOM have a nationwide monitoring network. This isn't bullshit, this is fact and evidence has been used from it to prosecute people. Information was used from it to DF the guy who was convicted at Hull Crown Court. If a business licence holder puts in a complaint OFCOM use the AMS system to locate the offending transmitters.
SDR radios are very capable of doing diversity reception, hell even my Flexradio had the ability to do it. Using diversity reception you can work out the direction of signals. Using SDR radios you can access them over a network or the internet.
This was the state of play as far back as 2005....
Ofcom currently has two programmes which utilise unattended equipment for spectrum management and interference resolution purposes.
The remote monitoring and direction finding (RMDF) system currently consisting of 24 sites with the capabilities to detect signals and their direction of arrival from 20 MHz to 3 GHz.
The Unattended Monitoring System (UMS) currently with 28 sites capable of providing occupancy information from 20MHz to 3GHz.
These systems have been deployed separately because the RMDF systems are optimally sited on high ground so that they have the highest chance of receiving an interfering signal, whereas the UMS systems are optimally mounted in city centres where they only receive local signals and so can accurately map the usage in that city.

Here in Finland when tv went digi, they scrap the licence fee for tv 100%, but the next day we got a new tax, called Media Tax, take a bit from your wage and give it to the tv dept, even if you do not have a tv,
Works so far.

If OFCOM are that hot, how come they haven't stopped the local repeater abuse that's been going on here (Leics. E Mids) for years. Everyone knows who it is and he gets away with effing and blinding on any analogue repeater he can find. He has been reported countless times yet he persists with the abuse with little regard to genuine hams. He's an M5 licence holder too, so it takes the p***. /rant.

That's an old question Mitch , there has been lots of Amateurs I've seen been mentioned about the radio community over the years that have been doing stuff that's against Ofcom rules and nothing been done about it ,theres even been some in news papers with proof and still nothing got about them .

I think, as with all bodies that hold powers of enforcement, (police, council planning dept, Ofcom, etc, ) it is a question of resources these days. When you think about it, Ofcom is a huge regulatory body with much to do. Some amateurs and 11 meters using a few extra Watts (a couple of extra dB) and the odd blue word is not really going to bother them.

Actually in all the years I've been around CB radio I have only heard of two people actually getting busted and that was back in 70s when we was all on illegal AM in my area of London and no one was caught by a detector van ,actually they was busted because of someone grassed them up to authorities, one was done by custom and excise for selling radios and was grassed on by jealous breaker who was also selling radios so to get him out of selling scene he got him busted, and the other was just a pratt he use to run 500watts all the time blocking the T.Vs out down his street plus causing crap with us other breakers blocking us out so someone grassed on him just get rid of him ,it showed what a idiot he was he had a large Sigma 2 antenna on the front of his house so he wasn't hard to find , but as I said in previous post never heard of anyone actually caught by a random van looking for signals in the very early illegal days it would have been easy really for them to catch someone because around my way you could count how many on air on one hand so interference would of stood out more but by the mid to early 80s there was loads so they didn't have enough people to do the job.
