Hi CT,
I have not used a CB radio for over 20 years but I am keen to get back into radio. I have recently bought an ICOM R30 Scanner and I am looking to purchase a second hand rig as soon as I can. I felt the first step should be to request a call sign.
Many thanks,
Al

Hi Al,
Welcome to Charlie Tango DX.
Shouldn't take long to get issued a callsign. Get that rig and start shouting out, it's been great hearing DX stations calling back Charlie Tango numbers on this summer's skip!
All the best, Victor

Hi Victor,
Thanks for coming back to me. Looking forward to getting the call sign.
I used to have a Fidelity 2000 back in the day. I had many years of enjoyment, my dad would drive me up to high ground to catch the skip.
I am based in the SW of England (Exeter) and I am not sure how many are actually using CB these days.
I see you are in Bedford, what’s it like ion your area?
Al

Hi Al,
No worries mate, like I said getting your callsign shouldn't take long.
Yeah I remember the Fidelity 2000 and isn't it great to have radio memories shared with your Dad
CB radio today is definitely not the same experience from the old days and depending on where you live there are still the old 'bucket-mouths' and potential DJs playing their music! You might be lucky and live in a quieter CB area in which case the CBers described are in smaller numbers if not non-existant as they usually need an audience. Worth remembering that if you do become one of their 'victims', just turn the radio off for a bit and they usually disappear!
Luckily CB has changed a lot, those who come on air tend to be a bit more polite, obtain callsigns and generally are a helpful bunch. You'll always get the odd knock down but usually in a somewhat helpful way, the old "you're off frequency", "your modulation is quiet", "you need a better antenna/rig/coax" etc. It's up to you whether to take the advice or take it with a pinch of salt.
You might find it all a bit quieter in your area, in which case you could shout out incessantly with no response! Don't despair, it might be weeks before you hear someone so calling out for a night or two is just a drop in the ocean. Then again, you may be lucky and find a 'net' first time, join in and then it becomes a regular thing
Anyway, in my area it's a lot quieter than would first seem. According to the Thunderpole site many people have purchased and registered CB radios in my area but if they are here.....I never hear them! There are some local breakers that have a chinwag amongst themselves on occasion but never on the same channels or times so can be hit or miss.
Luckily I have a Sideband capable rig and although at times it can be hard or impossible to get someone 20 miles down the road I've enjoyed some good continental skip this summer which is a darn sight further!
What you get out of this hobby is pretty much what you put in...
Purchase a 'legacy' rig and enjoy the memories of old every time you power it up. Get a sidebander, (remember it's legal nowadays and licence free), and set up the 'serious' DX station. Stick a rig in the car and race to the top of a hill for some DX attempt or even join in a UK net. Start playing with coax and bits of wire building antennas and whooping with delight if it works well, (and scratching your head when it doesn't work!) There are many aspects to enjoy
Enjoy as you see fit Al and remember, there's always places like here at Charlie Tango where fellow radio 'enthusiasts' are more than willing to help out.
Anyway, excuse my waffle....I have been know to waffle on here but hopefully in a somewhat helpful way
All the best, Victor
