SOTA (ish) Tents. Empty
PostSubject: SOTA (ish) Tents.   SOTA (ish) Tents. Icon_minitimeThu Sep 03, 2020 6:54 pm

Does anyone camp out when doing SOTA like comms?
I'm in a valley and to get any decent contacts I have to go to higher ground.

I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations or what I should be looking for in a tent so I could stay over a few days in reasonable comfort?

A possible tent, I think, is a Eurohike Sendero 4 Family tent from Go Outdoors. It wouldn't be used for actually camping at a summit, but driving to close by and setting up there, therefore the weight wouldn't be a problem.

I also get 15% off at Go outdoors for being a forces veteran and 10% at Mountain Warehouse so obviously these are the favourites.

Is there anything you think I should avoid or take into consideration?

Thanks
Nigel

Hi Nigel,

I think our Matt has done some SOTA judging by his past videos and CTX status here. I'm sure several others have too.

In my past I was a walker so simple lightweight bivvy stuff, so no real idea on 'luxurious' camping Wink

The tent you're looking at seems to be ideal for the price and I've seen SOTA activations in smaller tents. Might be just the job, but you don't gain real knowledge with it until you actually try. Someone's bound to have some input though.

Avoid or consider? Hmmm, be careful you don't empty your bank account on recommendations! Very Happy
Honestly, go on a SOTA site and they'll having you lashing out for Force 10s and stuff!! It's a SOTA, not Everest base camp!

Anyway, hope you get some useful pointers.

All the best,
Victor

Thanks again Victor  Very Happy

I followed the advice from M0RCP at https://reflector.sota.org.uk/t/what-tent/6306/3 to get to where I am now.

Good advice is timeless seems to apply  Very Happy

Edit: The bigger tent also means we can use it, when we're allowed to and from UK, for hols!!

Nigel
