Yup been there and done that. silicon grease is a must after using deoxit on the aluminium shaft and the brass ferrule.
The issue is disimilar metals brass sleeve and aluminium shaft they corrode and then grind the aluminum shaft as it is the softer metal.
If mine gets bad again I may see if I can get a brass shaft made up.
As for the rig I love it I also have the auto ATU, but being honest I prefer to use my FC700 manual atu.
Great thread though and some good info and links.

Hi Mark,

It does seem just from this post alone that many people have suffered the same/similar fate with the VFO encoder but really awesome that some of us at least have been able to rectify those woes. I think the efforts involved are well worth it for what is after all a very fine radio and like you I love mine to bits. (Literally! Wink )

If it helps anyone else out at all I did find a video concerning the VFO problems here :-

https://youtu.be/LVazd-JTOHo

There's also a good series of videos of a restoration, service & alignment of this radio one of which I'll link here :-

https://youtu.be/8PPVLaiiJmI

For the more electronically adventurous the service manuals are freely available on the old web. (So don't get ripped off 'purchasing' such files!)

My own efforts at keeping this old girl alive and well have rewarded me with worldwide transmitted contacts on every band she does let alone the many hundreds of hours spent listening to shortwave services.

So to yourself Mark and many more of us besides a deserved pat on the back is needed in keeping such radios going. Yaesu FT757GX VFO - Page 2 1f44d

All the best,
Victor
