Found my old radio from the early 90s and looking to get back into radio. Need a better rig and put an antenna up as what I'm on is very temporary (read: bad ), might need some help
Receiving a few stations East of London well and got a couple of local copies but I'm not getting out all that well on the return trip even to them.
Anyone on in the London or Essex area?
If you would be so kind to generate a callsign for me that's most appreciated, I'll have something better soon.
All the best!

You're very welcome Mark, the move went well thanks.
I've just moved from London to the midlands so we'll be needing a little short skip to make the contact!! I used to be able to work the east easily from my old QTH Sydenham near Crystal palace. I used to chat to some of the lads on GB3HW the Romford 70cm repeater.

Funnily enough I've got line of sight to the TV mast at Crystal Palace even from here, maybe that's why the trip works so well, think we're just on either side of the bowl of London.
Aware of the repeater, not sure exactly where it is around here and who runs it, maybe I'll take the foundation license at some point and dig into it a bit more.
Look forward to that skip, or maybe I'll throw a rig in the car next time I'm passing through.
Cheers, Mark.

I think you're right about the topography between Crystal palace and Romford it is pretty much line of sight.
I believe the repeater is in Harold Wood but you'll seldom get an exact location for security reasons.
Do consider taking your foundation exams. I love 11 meters and it's where I started in radio but it's amazing to have all the amateur bands to play on as well. I've not had a lot of radio time this year but 40 and 20 meters are my bands of choice and propagation is still reasonable there despite poor solar conditions.
Yes Mark do let me know if you're passing through this way specifically the Daventry Rugby areas and I'll keep an ear out for you buddy.

Thanks Steve and John, nice to meet you.
Harold Wood makes sense Gary, I guess it's around one of the hills that goes up towards Brentwood which would provide coverage from London into Essex, a good spot.
Have my foundation manual here, just over half way through, need to find some time in the new year to go over the online study and think about the exam.
I'm up the top of the M40 a few times a year and sometimes via M1/M45 so I'll get a rig in and shout.
Need to look at a homemade antenna, might start a thread in the forum for ideas.
73s to all, Mark.

Nice one Mark,
Good luck with those foundation studies, it's not hugely challenging and gets you on HF, VHF, & UHF so plenty of space to play in.
Do let me know when you're up this way I'm always up for a sked. I better get those antennas up this week though!!
I have a mixture of homebrew and bought antennas it's all part of the fun!!
