Hi all looking at so many radio's, I want a base radio, preferred widebanded, a simple radio, don't need menus, what's a good set, that can be used for TX once I get this foundation course done...if you could comment on antennas as well, might be able to install a LW-20...but a vertical to be the way to go. Thanks...

Have a look at the Yaesu 450d. It's about as menu free as you can get these days and a good entry level HF set. It comes with a built in tuner as well which will tune a mismatch of 3 or under.

Avoid vertical antennas if you can they bring in more noise. Have a look at the 421 Triband from G-whip https://www.gwhip.co.uk/421-triband-antenna it will get you on 40, 20 & 10 without any tuner and is pretty compact as well.

I would definitely recommend saving your pennies and getting a proper HF set if you can. Have a look on the secondhand market but do be careful not all sellers are honourable.

A good Kenwood TS 570 DG should be around £400 - 450. Along with a Hustler 4/5/6/ BTV is a good combination.
If you build the antenna correctly it will be resonant on each of the bands and the internal tuner not needed ( maybe on 80m )

Paul.

i like 2 old radios easy to use.
Yaesu FT-990.

Kenwood TS-570D
Both are simple to use and can be wide banded, some are already done.
5Watts to 100W perfect for moving up the ladder should you wish to and have SSB and FM modes on.
have a look.
