Its your ID number for the forum /radio club you've joined ie: CT ( what ever number is issued to you) by Gary one of our Admin , you use it to identify yourself to others on the radio , its shame Hamish none of the admin have shown you the newbie help section what you asked for so you can understand stuff more that's if we still have it on the forum . A bit of advise for you Google History of CB radio and have a read on all the stuff that comes up, at least you will get a idea of how CB radio works and how it came about over the years .

Hi Hamish,
Welcome to Charlie Tango.
If you do require a Charlie Tango callsign you only have to ask, but it also isn't a requirement so up to you.
I'm unaware of a 'newbie help section' as Martin, (Nubster), has mentioned but feel free to ask any questions you may have or browse through the forums past postings to glean further information. As suggested a search on the internet can bring you much information and places such as 'YouTube' has some great videos on the subjects of CB radio and other such.
Unfortunately Charlie Tango isn't manned 24/7 by it's members or even the voluntary admin so sometimes you may have to wait for answers to questions. We do however do our very best to help out where we can or point people in the right direction.
As regards anyone in your area, a brief search of the forum suggests many members reside there but we will have no idea if they are active on radio. The only real way of knowing is if you listen in on a radio or call out on air when you get setup.
All the best, Victor

@Victor, Pre Taptalk the old original forum we had a section for new members who had no knowledge of about CB or Amateur radio and even some who did ,:ie History of CB, how to SWR antenna, buying your radio, setting up your radio, 10 codes ,Q codes, even a bit of old school CB slang list, on the Amateur side how to join a club ,how to get your license plus lots of other information for the new members, shame it's gone, it seems a lot of good stuff got lost from the old forum when Taptalk took over and when we changed from them to this server, our old info section was useful back then it saved on new members keep asking the same old questions or them having to search through the whole forum for there answers and us keep on answering the same old questions even though we dont mind lol.

Ah, way back then Martin. Before my time mate (Don't get to say that often as an old git )
As you say, shame it was lost in the mist of time but there's a plethora of info out there. Lot of work to set that all up anew let alone update and maintain it so we'll just have to keep answering questions. Like you say, we don't mind one bit
You happily fire away with the questions Hamish, it's the only way we learn mate.
All the best lads.

Thanks for your replies. I have been googling away and found alot of information. Found it interesting about antennas and swr tests, from there I learnt a little about wave lengths... all stuff I hadn't a clue about. I didn't want to jump straight in and be disillusioned and give up especially if there wasn't anyone within range. Going to Google Q and 10 codes tonight and maybe find some slang to use

Hello Hamish,
It will be useful for you to learn the Q codes, but I wouldn't bother with the 10 codes, as they are no longer used on cb.

Hi Hamish,
I am over on the other side of Essex to you, but you being near the coast you should have good plenty of marine activity to rx in the area, Am I sure there's a few CB operators within 25miles of your qth.
Just remember once you have a mobile set up, try and find a bit of high ground to help when you tx/rx.
