Please could you assign me a CT call sign, but no rush though...
I’m another returning person to 11m from the distant past. I got into the hobby in the mid ‘80s when still at school. By the early ‘90s I was doing a lot of DX, mostly on SSB on the little space between the mid-block and UK FM channels, but also down on the super low block (as we called it then) and quite a bit lower. I was a proud owner of a modded Ham Jumbo III which I used for my home base and a Concorde III with a gold B300P in the car. Most of the home antennas I used I made myself and were loft based.
I qualified for and joined the Alpha Tango group in ’94 (26AT344), but less than a year later other things in life took precedence. I sold all my gear, the Jumbo going to a good home.. a local who was studying for his Ham licence and would make good use of it. So unlike quite a few returners, I don’t have any old proper gear to dig out again to use
Recently out of boredom I’ve made a couple of loft antennas tuned to the 11m band to feed a SW receiver I have by my bed. That’s helped pull in signals 25MHz and above a little better, a receive area which has been quiet using the bit of wire stuck in the back I had been using, and definitely is still not the most sensitive receive sections of frequency in the radio. No real strong locals to be heard, but a bit of skip here and there including a 30CT heard last weekend.
I toyed with the idea about buying a new receiver to listen to the band, but it’s fine for everything lower than 25MHz, so as I’ve made the antennas and have fed them with decent 50ohm coax I thought I might as well buy a transceiver that covers that bit as they are not wildly expensive and you can buy them new now.. something difficult to do 30 years back. I’ve made a 38amp PSU for free using the HP server PSU mod method from a module being thrown away at work, and just ordered a 6900 this morning.
So, by next weekend I should be live again. I know from past experience local talk won’t be my strong point from home because of where the antennas are, it will be mostly for skip, but still a bit excited though to get to key up after so long!

Hi Neal,
Welcome to Charlie Tango.
Nice intro mate, enjoyed reading your experiences. Like you I have some wire in the loft for 11m/CB, useless for local chat, (not that there is any my way), but does do well on the old summer skip
Enjoy your 6900 when it arrives and welcome back to radio, (not that it ever leaves you anyway).
All the best, Victor
