Hi

I've been reading about checking antenna tuning. If you buy a decent Antenna would it still need to be tuned?

As above all 11m antenna's need tuning not hard to do but you will need a SWR metre.
Unless it's a

SQBM500P MkII .

Just having a laugh it's Sunday.

Unfortunately not true at all , not all 11m antennas need tuning but ANY antenna / install needs checking with a SWR meter

Most 11m antennas come pre tuned and providing your coax and plugs are all in order then no tuning will be needed but I can’t stress enough how important it is to check everything out with a meter

I agree with you Craig but i think we all have the urge to adjust fine tune them.
If you put a silver rod up what are the chances of a 1 to 1 swr.
You check the swr and in most cases you will adjust it so tune it sort of
I put a pre-tuned gainmaster up last year but wasn't happy with the swr so i altered it.
Can't think of any aerial i have ever put up that was spot on first go first was a dv27 in the mid 70s and yes on a biscuit tin top of the stairs.

I must admit they seem to be a lot better today than they where back in the late 70s early 80s.

But put them on my car which has a hole in the roof mount and loads of bonding done and the SWR would be over 3 and they'd be resonant at 26MHz or slightly lower due to the much more efficient RF ground. I ended up having to cut 3 inches off mine to move it up ~ 1.5MHz to cover EU Ch1 to UK Ch40.

That's why you need to check the SWR when you install an antenna and not just assume they'll be OK out of the box because no two installations are the same.
