Morning. Just checked on Google maps and I am 66 miles as the crow flies from yourself. I'm based in north hull with not bad elevation for the area.

My base station is off air at present due to issues with the antenna but I should be back online tuesday all being well.

We could try ch 555 usb if you like.

Not sure about an earth Rod, it would act like a Lighting conductor.. look up Fred in the shed (you Tube) he has done loads of stuff with SWR and issues around Conductors.. hope you sort it stay safe.

I'll send you photos of my earth rod set up. Dead easy. Lowered SWR big time.

A radio expert friend of mine advised it who also has earthed his antenna.

I Simply got a copper earth rod (cheap) and some good farthing wire as pictured green and yellow.

Whack the earth rod into ground, connect the cable with cable rod clamps as pictured then connect to the antenna mount bolts (I used a wing nut to secure wire to the t and k bracket pole mounts).

That's what I did and it got swr low.

With regards lightning as noted by dave above I'm not sure. However in my unqualified opinion I think the earth rod would indeed earth any strike?

Above is what I did...not to be used as guidance or considered expert advice.

Hi Lads,

Just my tuppence worth......

Consider being very careful when 'earthing' antennas, quite often you convert it into a lightning rod!
(Up to 5 billion Joules from a lightning strike!! That earth rod will disappear in a flash along with everything else! Shocked)

Always worth reading up a bit and especially from a trusted or cited source.

The RSGB, (Radio Society of Great Britain), have some substantial info on such things. (Yes, it's Ham or Amateur Radio but CB is still radio and the principles are the same.)

For example :-

http://rsgb.org/main/files/2019/12/EMC07-v4-Earthing-and-the-Radio-Amateur-Basic.pdf

Plus be aware of 'Americanisms' when searching the internet :-

http://rsgb.org/main/files/2017/06/ARRL-Grounding-and-Bonding-UK-Overview.pdf

You can see from those documents there are also other things to consider.

A search around the RSGB site will herald much more info.

All the best,
Victor
