Hello.

I've just registered, can you issue me with a CT call-sign please, (Alex - Alkrington.)

I'm a recently retired accountant and 2 weeks ago decided to again take up the radio hobby that I last used in the mid 1970's when at University in London. I've upgraded my equipment and given my old items free to amateur radio enthusiasts I met on the "channels." They were very grateful because, apparently some of it was relatively rare, especially one of my old antennas which has caused a bit of a stir.

I'm looking into "direct access" with RSGB, but in the meanwhile the group have suggested that I join CTDX as a "stepping stone" where I will find a wealth of information. The large group that I speak to are all highly experienced and well seasoned but even so have welcomed me in. I feel that I need to learn fast and become licensed because it's frustrating that I'm nowhere near their level as it's painfully obvious that they are all "top channel" and M1's.

It's all very good fun with some very interesting and intelligent conversations. My greatest achievement so far is to pursued several of the group, with an average age in their late 50's, to go to their doctors for a prostate examination. I didn't want them to have to learn the hard way like me when it might then be too late. You can only imagine the laughter it caused on air when discussing what was involved, but on a serious note it took me to break the ice and get them talking. Unfortunately, there's more to life than just 12, 20, 40 and 80 meters, not that true enthusiasts will ever agree with me.

Regards,

Alex.

Hello Gary.

Thanks for the call sign.

Unbeknown to you I've got a fairly bad stammer and there are certain words/letters that I struggle with, but fortunately there is nothing in the call sign that you have kindly allocated that I can't say with ease.

Having a stammer / stutter can be very frustrating, not that it has ever held me back in life, but fortunately I have more good days than bad. I wonder how many of the radio community have a stammer and are still brave enough to transmit. I imagine that unfortunately there are many people out there with a stutter who would love to join this global community but will never do so.

O O O Over and Ou Ou Ou Out. If you really want to wind a stutterer up then ask him to say Roger Roger! Now that's a laugh.!

Regards, Alex.

Never let anything like that ever hold you back Alex.

As a long time Shortwave listener, CBer and more recently licenced Amateur, I've heard so many different voices on the radio waves and that includes stammerers and stutterers too. Sure, the BBC might not hire them to read the national news but it's great to hear all those individual voices on the airwaves. Smile

All the best,
Victor

Hello Gary & Victor.

Thanks for your earlier messages and welcoming me to CTDX.

I've noticed that my "Username" is the same as I initially registered, obviously. I had not realised that my surname would then be shown elsewhere e.g. in the call sign directory. I can see that other members are shown by just their christian names and/or a "handle."

Is it possible for you to change my username to just "Alex" and remove my surname, please. I've tried to do this under "Profile" but it is not possible.

Please do not think that there is anything suspicious, it is just a personal preference. Presumably this will also change the title/header of my original posts.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Alex.

Thanks

Welcome Alex, unfortunately Alex was already taken as a username therefore it is now Alexl (L). You had me going when reading your intro (very good by the way) I thought this chap has spelt Accrington wrong, lol. I’m totally ashamed to say I’d never heard of Alkrington!

Good luck with the “Direct access” if it comes about, or has it already?

Hi Paddy.

I thought it was just Gary & Victor as CT Directors. Seems that there's a multitude and if you continue "breeding" then there will be more Directors than CTDX members !!

"Any road up" as you strange Northerners say. I'm still learning the lingo because I herald originally from Sevenoaks, Kent but to my misfortune, whoops that should have said great fortune, I married a Manchester girl and moved 300 miles north. It was the way she said boooook and buzzzzz (big red thing on 4 wheels) that made me fall in love. If you don't know Alkrington, or give it its correct name of Garden Village, it's a quiet retirement area of predominantly leafy and rose clad bungalows 6 miles north of Manchester. You're not missing much unless you're into old dearies slowly walking along the road to the bus (buzzzz) stop.

Quick funny story, I pulled over in the car recently to ask for directions and the middle aged man said to go up "brew." As I wasn't after a pub I just drove on but later back home my wife translated it as "hill." I'm on a mission now to teach you lot to speak proper English like what I duz cumin from dowwn sowff, me old china !

The above is a long winded way to simply say thanks Paddy for changing my username so quickly. Maybe I should have asked for cockney diamond. Joking so don't you dare !

Cheers me old garden gate.

Regards
Alex.
