Hi Alan,

These modules tend to be 'discontinued parts' fairly quickly so you land up searching for NOS, (New/Old Stock), and paying through the nose for it. Usually there is another module, (and suitably numbered differently!), that does the same job often with the same connections/pinout.

I have 'popped' them open in the past and repaired them, faults usually range from cracked tracks on the PCB from overheating, (sometimes the backplate/heatsink warps!), to transistors blown. Sometimes it's cheaper to replace the transistors than the module(!)

You can 'convert' some of the similar modules by altering the tuned circuits to bring them into frequency for use and some will operate beyond their manufactured specs.

It's not for everyone, but these things are do-able.

Might be worth searching for 'cloned' versions of these modules too, the Chinese tend to be good at making copies. Wink

Sorry mate, best I can do as a quick search for that module and it's nearest equivalent heralded 'out of stock / discontinued' at most of the usual sellers. If I get the chance I'll search a bit harder, (grand children visiting at the mo).

All the best.

Thanks for the reply Victor.
I found one but it's £80 and not sure if the radio is worth it.
All reviews i have rate the set but it is a few years old.
Never seen one that is so easy to change you could do it with a screwdriver heated up on the cooker lol.
I will keep looking well tomorrow i will and also if you do find anything i would be very grateful Victor.
  Best Regards.

Morning Alan,

Yeah, £80 is pushing it mate the radios only sell for £100-£150 S/H from most dealers and often cheaper privately.

A quick scoot around showed the modules available on slow boats from China at around the £15 mark so might be worth it at those prices.

Still might be worth popping it open for a quick shifty - if there's bubbling or obvious heat damage around the transistors then I'd not bother but cracks on the inductive path tracks may be worth a go at. Be warned that the ceramic substrate means you'll need more than a simple soldering iron to reflow them, I've got a big 125W beasty for such jobs. Wink

Nothing to lose really if it's just a crack on a track, might last five minutes but could last forever with a decent reflow fix.

(Someone's bound to pop up the Beryllium Oxide substrate dangers but unless you're going to be grinding it down and snorting it up yer 'ooter there really is no issue. Same thing goes for licking heat sink compound off your fingers really - don't do it! Very Happy)

I hope you get sorted Alan mate or at least didn't pay too much for it in the first place.

All the best,
Victor

Hello Alan mate.

What a shame. Sad But flipping well done for trying!! Toshiba S-AV17 1f44d
(Bet that was a test of your eyesight and dexterity!)

Sounds like the final transistor has blown so you're only getting the drive. Four cracks is a lot so must've got really burning hot at some time.

If it helps any try the following eBay number :- 272807193840
(I hate giving recommendations in case anything goes wrong.)

Worth checking on prices as they fluctuate with the dollar value as well as demand. Seems to float around the £15 - £20 mark.

My HF set? I'll get back to it, can't be bothered as I'm having too much fun with the VHF stuff at the mo! Wink
(Always got too much to do as well....add it to the list.)

Anyway, well done for having a go. You might have to do like me and shelve it for a while.

Best of luck,
Victor

Tip in the iron was like a needle but under the magnifier looked like a 6 inch nail lol.
Tracking was the same size as the tip plus had my reading glasses on lol.
To be honest i didn't think i could do it but in for a penny as you do.
I know the guy i got it from and not joking he could well have had his long wire plugged into it as it did work last Wednesday when he picked up a fused power cable i made up for him and he gave me a shout when he got home.
Just bought that part i had it on my watch list so i might get it to work this time next month.
Just keep my fingers crossed.

Well done again Alan.

There's two schools of thought on reflowing solder, a teeny, tiny tip and magnifier such as you tried or a big old head with plenty of solder and flux akin to soldering QFP, (quad flat pack), semiconductors. My big iron has tips up to 10mm wide for such things. Wink

Looks like you already had that part sussed then so hopefully it won't take long to receive it. (Unless someone else jams a ship in the Suez canal! Very Happy)

Those P.A. modules can blow at any time mate so I wouldn't fret as to why, although you may have noticed a lack of heatsink compound use for whatever reason by the manufacturer. (?!?!?)

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you mate but you'll have to keep us abreast when you do repair it if only for the satisfaction of a job well done. Toshiba S-AV17 1f44d

This has been fun Alan, just hope we didn't bore anyone else too much.

All the best,
Victor

Morning Victor
Didn't think i would ever try super fine soldering again but i had a smile on my face when i managed to do this one.
Still i don't think i will ever get back into the repair side again like i did years ago.
Will update when the part comes.
Off to find my heatsink compound i know i have a new tube someware lol.

Hi Alan,

Sorry to hear you haven't been too well mate, (you had me worried at 'rushed into hospital'!), and I hope you are keeping well.

Nice to hear the part turned up but what was the 'scrap' radio for? Another module?

Don't rush yourself on anyone else's account mate, put your feet up and relax until you're feeling better. Toshiba S-AV17 1f44d

The radio will always keep for another day. Wink

Christ mate, you don't do things by halves!

Please take care of yourself. I know hospitals aren't the most wonderful of places, (and probably scarier after the last year odds events), but those people there do their best to keep us well.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Going the whole hog and replacing 3 of the backlights on it as well.
It will be a total loss at the end of the day but it's keeping me happy lol.
Don't think it is worth what i have spent on parts but from the reviews it was a good radio in it's day.

Great to hear Alan and also well done with restoring further with the back lights. That Kenwood was lucky to have someone like you around. Toshiba S-AV17 1f44d

Glad you enjoyed doing it mate, that enjoyment is something that money could never buy and that radio would never have been pressed back into service if the job was based on price alone.

My own gear is like that with 40 to 50 year old radios that wouldn't see the light of day becoming landfill dross otherwise!

Old/broken radios are a joy for the likes of us Alan, (plus others), and there's that little 'environment-saving' tick for us too. Wink

Well the back-light bulbs turned up yesterday so set about it this morning easy job me thinks.
Wrong the replacement bulbs where a tad bigger than the hole in the circuit board ????.
Well it had to be bigger so i got a drill bit and gently very gently enlarged the hole  pirat pirat .
Bingo it all lights up just like new.
No idea what i will do with it now but it kept me busy for a while lol.
