Has anyone used or using a 1:1 choke balun? Do you have much luck?

They should always be used when using an unbalanced feeder i.e coax to connect to a balanced antenna like a dipole. If you are getting RF in the shack ferrite chokes can work well too.

Hi Matt,

I haven't seen that particular video, but yes you are correct, good radio housekeeping is a must. EMC is a big subject and anyone setting up a new shack be it C.B. or Amateur stations would do well to ensure that they have all of the possibilities covered.

I always use a RF choke on every antenna. Once tried my Imax 2000 without it and got all kinds of issues you'd expect from common mode RFI.

Most of the time it's nothing more complicated than 8 turns of coax round a FT240-31 / 43 toroid.

If you don't want to use a toroid then for air wound you need 5 turns of RG58/213 on a 4.25" diameter centre - 110mm diameter waste pipe from MKM is ideal for making them.
