Hello Skipper and everyone else. My first post and apologies as I joined a few weeks ago but haven't found the introduction thread. Only the CT call sign request thread.
I have just ordered a CRT SS 9900 with Sirio 4000 antenna. (Thinking I should of got the 5000 now )
Anyway in answer to your question I watched videos by fred in the shed by accident being a home brewer of alcohol and he popped up on YouTube making Guinness lol. That lead to me watching his cb vids and then others, then thinking. Hmmm, I'll have a bit of that again 40 years on.
Since mine will be mobile the smaller size of the 9900 compared to the CRT SS 6900 was a decider, but I prefer the look of the 6900. Looks easier to use as an introduction and is cheaper lol.
If I decide to go homebase I'll probably put a silver rod up which I believe are around £35-40 or attempt to make my own antenna from bits begged stolen and borrowed

Hi Fred,
We did have a new member fairly recently asking the same question from Southampton. The only real way of telling is for you to see what activity is happening on the band in your area but also remembering to transmit rather than just listening as you could have others doing the same and never knowing each other was there(!)
There's a good movement on PMR radio called the "8 @ 8" where people give a shout out on PMR channel 8, at 8 o'clock on Sunday evenings to gain better success at contacts. I tried fruitlessly for months in my own area giving a shout out but other areas have been quite successful with it. Shame that there isn't a similar activity on CB radio but always worth giving a shout out on typical channels such as 14 or 19 UK as often as possible to increase your chances of radio contact.
I think unfortunately that many just simply listen for activity rather than being a part of it by transmitting as often as they listen. It used to be called "Two-Way Radio" for a very good reason.
It's definitely much quieter than the old days of CB but judging by the amount of callsign applications made here at Charlie Tango there must be people on air. Unless they all bought a radio, listened and heard nothing then gave it up as a 'bad lot' - Who knows?
I wish you well with it.
All the best, Victor

Sorry only just noticed these replies. I'm near Chester/Wrexham and also Betws-yn-Rhos . So The great orme might be an ideal spot whenever I get chance.
I did find that link but it only seemed to be for applications of call signs unless I'm missing something.
Cheers.

Afternoon glenn dog, Bands seem a bit quieter as I’ve just switched on the radio. Just the odd 30 divisions heard so far.

Up at Abergele for a few days and plenty heard on usb 555. CB I had quite a few contacts . One time, three breakers in Snowdonia, Blackpool and Lancaster. Another day there were three local (6-8 miles) breakers on chatting on a high channel. They confirmed there is activity and reeled off a few names and locations. One did mention people seem to come on once never to be heard again.
I did have one contact like that. Possibly holiday makers. Just a quick "Roger" or rig report and gone.
Interestingly I was up high from the coast but just over a brow. Moved to the top of the hill overlooking some coast and less signal coming in. Nothing heard on PMR up there yet but not made any great effort. Can hear a lot on PMR from Deeside. Mostly scouse accents so probably the Wirral, Ellesmere port ?

Well dead as a dodo here in Aylesbury vale been like it for years about 3 or 4 at the most if ya lucky all gone amateur now but that's getting quite on the 2 meter band to. Trouble is that people put there radio on and think it's dead but then we all do the same thing don't we ? I do put a few calls out when I get home from work and then leave the radio on in the back ground and listen to the skip bringing in euro and UK stations which has been pretty good lately.

Same here in my location, but then it got better, about 15 locals to me and a motorway truck transport depo open up about 5km away so i now hear those mobile truckers, Finland use AM more for basic road chats, away from home location it is very bad, i have a weekend cabin in the woods, nothing near me on CB,but Forest radio is working well and now permit free, 68 to 71 meg, 5w to 25w is allowed. CB in the forest area works very well for DX when it is on the go, and CB hand held i use when on the lake in a small boat to call back to the cabin.

Evening all
Its not totally dead round here but the undertaker has his tape measure out at the ready. Its sad really. They'll all be back again when the next lockdown comes A number of factors responsible I guess. Mobile phones and social media are probably the major culprits. The QRM probably doesn't help matters either. There are no communities now either are there. The mass closure of public houses, libraries and community centres over the past 25 years haven't helped matters on that score. WE NEED ANOTHER "CONVOY" or "SMOKIE and the BANDIT" to be released or rebooted. I'm not a big fan of reboots but in this case I'd go for it. I dug out a couple of old 8 channel walkie talkies i bought from Tesco in the noughties. Im assuming they're 0.5 watt PMR446 so will be giving them a dust down and a fresh set of batteries. I'll give it a listen at 8 on 8 on sunday.
