Sod's Law, went down the garden as its quite bright and a pleasant temperature down there today, to take a few pictures I promised, and my phone was flat...

Oh well, give it an hour, and I'll have some piccies.

Just finalising the Centre Support Design, could be a week or so before this is finalised, so all that is up is the 4mm Polypropylene Rope at the moment.

I use a variety of couplers, I have a multitude of 49:1 and the odd 4:1, these match the impedance of the antenna to the feed line. I then use a tuner to make the PA finals completely happy. This last step is not truly required, but it stops any worry Smile

Ok, I've come up with a design for the centre dipole support, I did think about having something bespoke made, but that just made the process reliant on others that are currently busy, and would cause more delay.

So I've got some spare 48mm Aluminium Scaffold Tubing, spare galvanised antenna clamps, have an abundance of 4mm polypropylene rope, a couple of spare marine D-Shackles, and a few other sundries.

I'm going to buy some more marine Eye Bolts, a couple of galvanised Scaffold Clamps, and two Nylon Thimbles, then cut metal and bolt / clamp it altogether, and attach it to the lattice tower at chest height for fitting / adjustment, and too take a picture or two.

Hopefully it won't be too shabby, ha.

OK, enough parts, marine stainless steel/galvanised, or marine quality, have arrived to manufacture the centre support for the Lattice Tower...

Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27285610

Bought two types of Wire Clamp, probably will use the double clamps as the antenna wire is 1.6mm or 16 gauge, best I construct the Support and take a picture, but the parts might be a clue as to how it will be made, obviously some Pyrex will be involved.

A little frustrating waiting for deliveries of certain items, but I'll get there., most of the groundwork his been completed for the wife's Sun Trap Patio (Summer seems a long way away), just some finishing touches, sodding weather.

Anyway, it is what it is.

Nice weather this afternoon, so started building the centre support that will fit at the top of the lattice tower...

Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27288710

Looking alright so far...

Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27287610

Should be fine I think.

However, I think I need to design a spacing bracket to support the SGC-235 lower down the tower.

Ok, had to adjust it, and mark it for when it goes on the top, so...

Support has to be 9 inches from the tower, so I've measured to the centre of a pair of Eye Bolts that have yet to be drilled and fitted , Sun's gone in, so I'll do it tomorrow.

Ok, its sodding chucking it down here again, so no drilling and measuring outside today...

So made up the insulating wire supports for the centre lattice tower instead...

Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27314710

For those remotely interested these are all marine grade fittings, the pulley will be to run through the Copperweld antenna wires North and South from the tower, I seemed to have an excess of 4mm Polypropylene Rope,  I've used a Palomar Braided Fishing Knot through the 4" Pyrex Dog Bones, then I used Nylon Thimbles and Cable Ties, all cut ends were thermally melted with a match to prevent fraying and slippage, and each side will be supported on an Eye Bolt that will be drilled through the centre support created in the previous post.

When it stops raining long enough I might venture outside, but its likely to be Wednesday now, since I go Target Shooting all day Tuesdays.

Anyway, just a brief update.

Was tuning this today...

Ok, finally good enough weather to venture out, looks like I only need one Eye Bolt...

Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27339010

Well that was easier than I thought it would be, only thing is now digging out the SGC-235 and seeing what sort of stand-off mounting bracket it needs on the Lattice Tower.

A step closer...

Might seem things are taking too long, but there's been a day's work done around the base of the tower and there's at least another half day where I'd be in the way, and neither of us have been able to do it in the rain, so I hope to measure up and order any bits I need before the weekend, then look at how I'm going to erect the rest on the tower, before it's taken down.

Brief update

Had some more parts turn up, just a set of eight Shelly clamps as in the most recent pictures, so I can make up the brackets to support the SGC-235.  Requires some drilling and the purchase of some stainless steel bolts, washers, and nuts, and further cutting up of some 50mm Aluminium Scaffold Tube.

Pictures soon as its together as a test fit at the bottom of the tower.

Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27362010Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27365010

Ok, actually going to use stainless steel bolts, nuts, washers to connect the mounting plate at the back of the SGC-235 onto the four clamps at the ends of the short scaffold poles, these will need to be drilled for this, but it should provide a rigid structure that can have its distance from the tower adjusted to be vertical with the centre support above.

Next I'll be offering up the SGC-235 and marking for drilling these clamps.

Ha, no next I've ordered some drill bits, as I broke a few recently, but have discovered I'm one shelley clamp down, so ordered yet another, plus jubilee clips for attaching VHF Dipoles.

Here's a test fit of the 30mm Scaffold Pole that will support three vertical VHF Dipoles

Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27371710

Here's a 40" long length of 2" Aluminium Scaffold I have left, just the one clamp fitted (ordered another), this will support the Diamond V2000 6/2/70 Co-linear at the top of the tower

Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27371810

Here's the set of three VHF Dipoles that 'er indoors is happy with, these are 4m, 2m, and 70cms.

Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27370110

Life is a compromise, but at least I'll be on the air with something.

OK plan has changed, decided that swaged 30mm galvanised 6ft tube wasn't a good fit, diameter wrong for dipole fitting (requires 1 inch), plus too heavy.

So have ordered a 1 inch diameter aluminium 2000mm long tube as a replacement, saves weight and right dimensions.

Also, after measurements, the 2" Aluminium Scaffold will also support the 1 inch Aluminium 2000mm tubing to mount the VHF Dipoles.

Just makes things easier to set up.

Means the 40m Dipole will be at 5 metres rather than 6 metres, so a bit of a compromise going on, as I don't want any contact between antennas.

Tiny update:

Ok, a Shelley Bracket and the 1 inch x 2000mm 16 gauge Aluminium Tube turned up, did a quick test fit but as some other stuff needs to be delivered to mount antennas on it for a final ground level test fit, I'll wait for that moment before taking any more pictures.

Some more bits turned up, bolts, washers, jubilee clips, just waiting for the final delivery and a break in the weather.

Still waiting for a few bits, but enough has arrived to test fit the SGC-235, and the Mounting Pole for the V2000 and VHF Dipoles, as it was raining I decided not to actually test fit everything, next job is to lower the Lattice Tower onto Wooden Crates, to actually fit all the antennas to it.

The Coax and Control Cable is bagged up to protect from the weather.

Nice, I am watching this with interest, but, ultimately will end up with something not so good one day.

Mate, everything is a compromise, and really with this I've made a rod for my own back, I started wanting professional looking fittings and quality of components, then went old school with Pyrex as these were beautiful (so much that the wife wanted them as Christmas Tree decorations, had to fight her off), plus changed to Copperweld instead of insulated copper cabling, just for aesthetics to match the Pyrex really.

So definitely a rod for my own back, as everything suddenly had to match the precision, I only used cable ties as a last resort, and not as an essential component, but most of this could be achieved with cable ties and string.

You'll note that I made two sets of bracket supports for the SG-235, as I wasn't confident a single pair would be strong enough, turns out its an over complication, and doesn't 'look' as good, so removed the second set (also pleased 'er indoors).

I've made up trapped dipoles in the past, and used the quickest and cheapest methods to erect these, they worked well, except for being an East-West orientation (worse case for DX), but I always looked at it and felt I could do better.

When we moved house in 2004 I specifically wanted a longer South facing garden for a wire antenna, and the house had to be on a hill to take advantage of the Shropshire Plain, I bought the right place and then didn't do anything for 17 years...

So when I started again, I'd set myself high standards that really weren't necessary, but I felt I wouldn't be putting these up again (unless the antennas get damaged), and would likely never move house again, so hence building something that is going to last a long time.

Some plans have changed, some are still in trade (Butternut, Satellite Dish), but I'm likely never going to erect a beam at this QTH, the wife doesn't like them, the V2000 used to be on a rotator for the unusual 6m Dipole Counterpoise, which wasn't omnidirectional, hence investing in a proper set of 6m Radials for this antenna to make it at least as omnidirectional as possible as a Co-Linear.

Will be happy when this project is over, as it'll focus me on finishing the Shack this Summer.

I really do want to see how it works for you. I'll probably put up a low linearly loaded dipole sitting above my radial 'field' to enhance vertical take off.

Compromise is necessary. I used to have a 4 x 17 ele 144MHZ array with an 3CX800 amp and run moonbounce - then I moved and I've never been able to set anything like it up again. Vertical wires, halo's & moxons all fed by coax are doable here. It's not even worth trying eme or even VHF from here as I'm in a fairly steep sided river valley a matter of tens of feet above sea level - the river is tidal. I never see the moon at a decent declination.

I'll get something sorted other than a 1/4 wave vertical and we should be able to chat easily Smile

OK, Off topic this comment, but mods I promise the next post will be.

Already looking at options for mounting a wind generator, its probably not going on the tower, but the roof of the shack is definitely getting solar panels, and although it would have to be a contractor, I want vacuum tube Solar Water Heating on the South Facing Roof of the house.

Why?  Well I just bought shares in a Wind Farm in Scotland, ha, gone all green except I own three cars on the driveway, and the wife owns a fourth one, and none are EV or hybrid.

Right, did a bit of a tidy up before the rain came down like stair rods again, got a little bit wet, but managed to get a few piccies.

Mounted the SG-235 at the height I want it, after trimming the Scaffold Tubes and re-fitting, looks much tidier, and 'er indoors is slightly less grumpy as a result.

Ok, bit of a close up of how I drilled 6mm holes in the Shelley Brackets, and bought some M6 Bolts, Nuts and Washers.

Finally trimmed the Scaffold Poles Centre Mount, and test fitted it near the bottom of the tower, this will be fitted at the top of the tower, when I get it lowered onto wooden trestles and attach all the antennas.

Ok, during another break in the rain, all the test fittings have been removed, and 'er indoors new Sun Patio protected against any damage when the Tower gets brought down for antenna installation, using the pallet cage that the stone slabs came in as a trestle.

Just waiting for the weather and my son's availability.

Yes, Poppy the Siberian Husky likes lying there in the rain, really weird as the two Labradors wuff to come back in the moment the Sun goes behind a cloud...

Yes that is a target backing, I have been shooting 25 yards Target Competition .177 Air Rifle, and the parts for the new sandpit rifle butts are stacked at the bottom of the garden, job for the spring I think.

Well, a break in the weather, the Tower is down, busy this afternoon lining up antennas, so far all VHF/UHF is on the Tower, plus the 40m Dipole Whip, well almost.

Lots of coax to run, and half the 4m dipole, and both halves of the 40m Dipole Whip will have to be screwed in when the tower is back up.

So really not quite half way sorted and the light was fading, didn't even get to start running the random wire dipole up the Tower, so fingers crossed the weather is good tomorrow.

Couple of pictures before the light failed.

Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27454910Project: PC-ALE or JS8Call NVIS HF Antenna + SG-235 + FT-847 - Page 2 27452910

Obviously I've removed some radials etc, and ensured any wind overnight won't topple the Tower onto the ground and destroy all my efforts.

Anyway, progress, although the Diamond V-2000 with EAV2000 Radials is at 22ft 9 inches, the 4m, 2m, and 70cms VHF/UHF  Vertical Dipoles are now at 16 ft 6 inches, and the 40m Horizontal Dipole Whips are now down at 12 ft.

Antenna spacing and the fact that the wind could make radials/dipoles touch during TX/RX.

The EAV2000 Radial Kit turns the V-Dipole on 6m that the Counterpoise provides on that band, into a 1/4 wave on 6m, it doesn't affect the 5/8th Wave on 2m, or its performance on 70cms.

The reason for the 4m Vertical Dipole is because I want to use PC-ALE and JS8Call on all bands on the FT-847, which transmits about 10 Watts max through the 6m coax connection on the back, although you really don't want to run it at 10 Watts, I suspect I'll be running nearer 1 to 2 Watts.  To do this I plan to construct a Diplexer for 6m/4m as a project.

The 2m Vertical Dipole is for the Local Club Net, I have an old 2m Transceiver for SSB/FM, the 70cms Vertical Dipole will likely require a new radio, since that will be for the Local Repeater, GB3LH, and I'm not sure I have anything that supports DCS.

The 40m Horizontal Dipole Whips will be for Packet, but I may use it for a CT 40m Net, I have an old HF Transceiver, still can't remember the model number.

I'll also try using the random wire dipole through the SG-235 for the Albrecht AE 5890 EU CB, as both the CB 5/8ths Vertical is still in trade, along with an FT-991A for my Butternut HF-9V, depends on how much we spend on the wife's new kitchen, and her patio furniture I think.

Oh well, fingers crossed on the weather tomorrow.

Ok, ran the lines of coax for the VHF/UHF Antennas, plus the 40m Dipole Whips, made it look as tidy as possible, had to rotate the tower for this.

Once done, it was rotated back, my back was killing me putting cable ties on everything.

Tomorrow I pre-tension the random wire dipole with spreaders on the side of the tower.

Have some lightning arresters on order, these will be earthed to the tower, those will be fitted, and SO-239's will terminate on the tower base not sure exactly how high above the ground so I've left a lot of spare cable and labelled what antenna they feed, then secured from the weather in a plastic bag.

Hopefully the weather will be as kind tomorrow, but I'm done for the day.

I was surprised how much water got in a plastic bag i use in the same way.
Looking good m8 all i managed today was the coax from the cobweb fed into the new shack.
Might get the main pc over tomorrow and a radio will have to come with that lol.

I first used some sort of bio degradable plastic bag and that let water in like it wasn't there, I'm since moved over to the bags we use for the dog poo, which is water proof, plus you have to ensure you hang these with the opening at the bottom, otherwise the water comes inside with gravity down the wires/coax.

Same principle as leaving a drip loop before bringing coax/cables into the shack.

Today looks like wire pre-tensioning day, no wind, hope to get out there this morning ans start with that.

Ok, what a ball ache this ladder spaced porcelain has turned out to be, anyway, its ready for the tower to be erected again.

Used Palomar Knots for the 7" Pyrex Dog Bones, looks like each leg is going to be 19.1m Horizontal, and about 4.1m of Vertical, so ~23.2m per leg, and a half wave of 46.4m overall, so resonance on ~3.23MHz, maybe.

Oh well, lets see how long before the tower goes back up.

These turned up today, Lightning Arrestors, so when it goes up, and I terminate the cables with SO-239's (have to order some), these will go on the tower.

Ha, just realised I have 6 antennas and only five Lightning Arrestors, doh!

Also its more difficult to terminate with SO-239, so I'm terminating with PL-259s, also looking at a 14mm ring earthing point at the base of the tower, using one of the tower bolts/washers/nuts, since there's about 4ft of mild steel cage underground, in the water table.

The SG-235 comes with a fixed length of RG-58 and a PL-259 for the HF Transceiver, as I want to be able to lower the mast (infrequently), I'm going to have coax connections on the tower, so the RG-58 will have to be shortened, along with a set of coax lines coming into the shack wall, probably in a plastic tube conduit I can fill with foam, to connect to a triplexer, diplexer, antenna switch, and various transceivers.  I'll have to decide where all these will go before being in a position to feed lines outside, ha.

Lots of faffing about to take place.

Ok its up, still need to attach the legs and apply tension to the random wire, but need a few bits...again.

Anyway, progress...
