Hello to everyone,

I wanted to ask you about how can I bring a coax cable RG-58 into my house without making any holes in the wall of my house. (I am 13 years old BTW. I am not experinced LOL.)

I need this info, because my "DX" station is in a car that isn´t used by my family anymore, and, here in Slovenia is winter so in that car it gets cold by the night.

Thanks for any help and 73s by

Patrik

Hello Patrik,

You can get a "Through window connector" here's one example

https://moonrakeronline.com/diamond-mgc50-through-window-cable

It might be a bit lossy but if it's your only option then definitely worth considering.

Key Features/Specifications:
  • Frequency Range: DC-1500 MHz

  • Connectors: SO-239

  • Length: 19.6 inches

  • Max Power: HF 150W PEP (50W CW), VHF: 40W FM, UHF: 30W FM, 900MHz - 1.3GHz: 10W FM

  • VSWR: <500MHz 1.2:1, <1000MHz 1.3:1, <1500MHz 2:1

  • Loss: 144MHz 0.3dB, 440MHz 0.6dB, 1200MHz 1.6dB

  • Impedance: 50 Ohm

73's Gary.

Thanks Gary,

I will consider this option.

Looks inviting, especially because is, like you said, my only option.

I just wanted to ask another thing.

How much watts can I transmit whit if I am using RG-58? Some peopole tell me is 100 W, some tell me that it´s more.

Can somebody help me with this question?

73s,

Patrik

Hi Patrik,

Power rating of RG58?......depends on who you ask! Wink

The voltage rating is specified as 300 Volts max. so using Ohms Law the rating would be :-

P = V^2 x R

so

P = 300^2 x 50  =  90000 x 50  =  1800

So technically 1800W, but if you want to allow for a safety 'er' factor then halve the voltage which gives 450W.

I'd happily run up to 500 watts up the stuff on HF frequencies and probably wouldn't use it at all on VHF/UHF frequencies due to losses, but you could probably half the power further at VHF frequencies.

If using any on a long run and allowing for antenna mismatches you could reduce that power handling even more.

Hope that helps.

All the best,
Victor

Thanks Victor!

I appreciate all your help on these forums!

BTW, this is not the Ohm law, the Ohm law is, for example, R = U : I. What you have calculated is power, so you used another law.

Thanks, anyway, your calculation was right, but I didn´t know about the 300 V on the RG - 58.

500 W seems plenty to me...  Very Happy

Ha! Ha! Very Happy

Technically you're quite right there Patrik with VIR being Ohm's Law and PIV being Joule's Law but the combined full calculator wheel is/was commonly referred to as the 'Full' Ohm's Law.

Poor old James Prescott Joule will be turning in his grave! Wink

(As will my old Electrical Principles Professor!)

Anyway, glad it was of some help with the 300 volt rating and sounds like you'd have figured it from there yourself.
Good to have you onboard amongst the CT brethren and forum, also nice to have a young mind to keep me on my toes! Antenna positioning 1f44d

All the best,
Victor
