Hello everyone!
I'm new here, and kind of new to the whole radio world in some ways. I've used radios for years in the emergency services world and also as a (now lapsed) aviator.
I'd like a callsign to get into the PMR466 community- I'm starting simple and on a budget with a Baofeng BF-888. I'm planning on joining the Sunday night net from hope mountain in north east Wales - good chance of a line of site to others in the north West of England. My QTH is near Caernarfon in north Wales though.
I also have an old CB radio that I might try.
Longer term I'm thinking of going for my foundation licence, but that will be in the autumn. In the meantime, il be licence free. I'd really like a callsign so I can bridge the gap between gobbing off into a radio and having a little more etiquette as I get into the hobby!

Hi Dafydd,
Welcome to Charlie Tango.
Great intro and good to hear about your radio activities and interests. You'll be surprised of what can be achieved on the little bf-888 both on PMR as well as licensed 70cm frequencies.
Your profile is complete ready to go for call sign allocation so just keep an eye on this posting for when admin responsible issues you.
Many here have taken similar radio adventures leading onto becoming licensed Amateur Radio operators so if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask on the forum. There's plenty of helpful members here more than willing to help out where they can.
May I wish you the very best with your radio interests and aspirations as well as good luck with your future plans of undertaking the Foundation exam. (Definitely do it, glad I finally did as I've never had so much radio fun! )

Hi Victor, Steve! Thanks for the warm welcome! I've actually used the baofengs for years at events - despite being a bit of a grey area they're the backbone of event control for many events and as I often have a site radio when I'm doing event medic work, I'm really familiar with them. In commercial use at events they've never let me down over the last few years. I'm hoping for at least 10 miles range up the mountains...
I actually thought I'd get into radio a bit more (exception airwave and baofengs) after watching Ringway Manchester's videos on YouTube. Kind of gave me a bit of a bug once again!
I joined the PMR Sunday night net group on Facebook and was amazed to see how much interest there was. So looked up the baofengs, realised I could get a pair of 888s for £20 (also handy for hiking/fishing/whatever with the wifey)... And then realised that baofeng have some nice looking 2/1.2/.7 metre radios for what is effectively beer money. I'll wait to buy myself one as a congratulations for passing my foundation though so it doesn't lead to temptation in the mean time!

Many thanks Gary, I am sure I will. I'll try it out on the channel 8 net this Sunday at my QTH (but probably won't get anything!) And again mobile from hope mountain next Sunday!
