does anyone know what the procedure is for cw on 6900n, does the key go directly to the station or is there an el key in between?

Hi Aleksandar,

I'm afraid I don't know the CW procedure on these radios and a quick scout on the internet didn't turn up any help either.

From what I remember there is a jack at the back of the radio but whether this is for a CW key or a method of switching I'm uncertain.
(I would've presumed the keying would be performed on the PTT connection??)

Currently I'm on my old tablet checking the forum but when I get a chance to get on the laptop I'll have a scoot around or check out the schematic.

If you do find out yourself either through further information or experimenting it'd be great to share your results here on the forum as it may ably assist others thinking of doing the same thing.

All the best,
Victor

hi Victor, I didn't find anything on the internet, reading the user manual, I assume cw key goes directly to the station.I printed cw key on  3d printer. I still need to assemble it, maybe paint it...

Hi Aleksandar. The manual for this radio has been re-written a few times by other people to make it more understandable. The version I have shows:

This jack is for Morse code operation; To operate, connect a CWkey to this jack and place the MODE switch in the CW position (LCDdisplay icon "CW")

I have not tried this, but it looks your first thought was correct.

I have an AT-5555 which is the same. The CW key is directly connected to the plug. I also 3D-printed my key. When operating the key i find the volume quite loud, but can't adjust it.

Great to see some added input to your CW question here Aleksandar.

A quick look at the schematic shows a simple transistor buffer/debouncer circuit from the CW jack socket on the rear of the radio but then disappears off to the microprocessor so can't tell its true functionality such as XIT/RIT control or sidetone features etc.

It looks like a simple grounded key input so any iambic features would have to be done externally or just rely on good old hand dexterity and code timing. Wink
(Link to schematic :- https://www.cbtricks.com/radios/crt/ss6900/index.htm )

From what Karel has said it seems that any sidetone feature or reception is very loud!

(I'm also not sure if there is any traditional narrowband filtering of the CW signals in any way?)

I'm surprised there wasn't more info out there regards CW operation on such radios but then you'd only have the 10m CW section on an expanded radio anyway. Got to say although I've heard Morse on CB frequencies it's very rare and usually monotonic due to computer generation rather than the manual bounce of a fist. I'm sure dedicated CW Ham operators will usually utilise alternative rigs.

Have fun with 3D printing your key.  ss 6900n and cw key 1f44d

Hello everyone!
Here is about a CW problem on the CRT SS 6900. First how the key works, it is a simple key, the complex ones I use in other radios don’t work. The key makes contact and the tone is transmitted. The mic key is disabled on the CW mode, it does nothing.
Here is the “problem”: when I emit … … … the first dot is omitted, as if a relay (either mechanical or electronic) kicks in and permits the tone to be generated. Then if I continue to type dots they are all fine, but if I leave a pause of 1 sec the next first dot is omitted again, and so on. This renders keying impossible.
I listened closely into the unit to see (hear lol) if there is a relay sound, the only thing I could hear it is the speaker making a tiny “click” 1 sec after stopping the keying. After this click the first fraction of a second of the new keying is eaten, omitted, the length of a quick dot.
Victor I’m lucky you understand schematics so maybe you could have an insight about this problem? It seems to me that if I could choose some menu item (probably non existent) about at what speed transmission starts and choose “immediate”, then this will be fixed! If there is such an option I wonder what is the use of slightly delaying Tx…

Have all fine holidays!

Victor thanks soo much for the help and info!!

I have to tell you sincerely that “by intuition” I too suspected a capacitor even before looking at the schematic. To me it felt like some “bag” is being gradually filled up with electricity before kicking the circuit, and you confirmed this impression. I may cut the electrolytic capacitor leaving its legs stick up and solder onto them the small capacitor that you advise (smaller “bag” lol). I’d never bear any thought of complaint about your advise even if I grill my circuit terminally and irreparably by dropping the soldering iron and spilling the tea on it in the process 😝😀
I just wrote to the reseller (company here in France) for advise to see if they check how other units behave or ask CRT as well, if they don’t help then I’ll peel away the warranty stickers and do the experiment for I don’t intend to go through sending back the unit for refund etc.

You are right, the ham radios work fine on the morse, I have Xiegu6100 (extremely smooth unit!) and  the similar RS radio, both unlocked to do the 10m 11m bands. The keying is INSTANTANEOUS, no retard. Even a 20$ radio which only Tx - Rx on the 7,023MHz keys with no delay (but in its case each keystroke triggers a mechanical relay). Though with this unit I wanted to have something of a CB shape to have in the car which can do CW, my other radios are rooted to antennas in the attic. I’m not radioamateur, the only radio licence I have is aviation radio but I sometimes key to people (typing QRSS …v e e r y slow haha) and sometimes they answer and to me it’s enough to see if a given setup facilitates a good propagation and how far….

These days I notice an EXTREMELY intense CW activity around 28,030MHz (today there were a few dozens of stations chirping everywhere, and I could listen to them with a modded Quansheng UV-k6 $20 radio, Egzumer mod v 0,21 on the USB modulation…, with a short 60 cm CB antenna mounted on car’s roof).

I like to probably make a thread with a question to other ss6900 users about the unit behavior on the CW in this context but for the life of me I cannot find the “help asked” type of sub forum. Or should I post it to general topics?

Thanks once again!!
R
PS these keys are simple contacts and this is how all radios I have function, do some people use an interface that sends something more subtle than simple closing of the circuit to the key input of a radio?

Karel, do you find that your radio delays slightly like I describe above, eating the first dot of (let’s say) … three very quick dots? Then it does this every time you don’t key for longer than 1 sec?

Also, my radio ss6900v, supports only a simple straight key. What is yours?

Hi Aleksander, I have the same radio and it does not support anything other than straight simple key. I have a key as in your picture but the radio does not support it.

Also, could you please check if your radio eats the very first dot of very quickly keyed three dots … then if you stop for longer than second and do the same it delays again etc?

I d like to see if it’s only my radio that does this..

Thanks guys!

Hello Ross. I wired my 6900 today similar to how suggested in this post:
https://charlietangodxgroup.forumotion.com/t6173-crt-ss-6900v-function-menu-cheat-sheet#49697

My 6900 does not miss/delay/eat the first dot. Mine is the "n" model not "v" model, but I cannot imagine much has changed in the two models regarding CW. TX on 6900 into antenna. RX on 991A with no antenna...

Sangue, thanks so much for testing, filming and sending this!!

It (yours) sounds to me OK. It still may have the delay because I’m talking VERY quick dots (each long 1/4 sec or less), this is how short this delay is. But my impression is Okay with yours.

Strange thing is that the difference between the “N” and “V” models is enormous inside. I join a photo of the new one (mine) and the N one inside.

I have located an electrolytic capacitor on the CW block that may cause the delay, yet I’m completely lost about finding this one on the new V board 😝 If anyone has the V model schematics please post them!

Wow, what a difference between the two models. I really imagined just a small add-on board for the  extra functionality of the v model, like the ctcss tones etc. But they have made a completely new board.

Here's what I get from my 6900v7, into a dummy load with straight key.

There does seem to be a small lag between keying and transmitting, which also seems to happen on other modes when using the microphone.  Max power is about 8W on CW.

Thanks a lot for the test MM0IMC! It does seem to do the same lag as mine, sounding just like that around the 0:13-0:15 time mark of the video.
I just got a second hand Lincoln I and its CW mode keys straight in without delay! Signal seems rather very broadband though 😝

I think many of the modern CB radios have a bit of 'lag', due to the processor inside them? 🤔
