Hi Lionel,

Probably worth saving a few more pennies towards a sidebander if you want a better range and join in on some of the DX fun. The Alan is a nice radio but without SSB you're limiting yourself.

'Classic' second hand radios still seem to be attracting higher prices and sometimes you'll land up with a bag of...well you know what I mean. (Many have been through more hands than a cheap hooker over the past 40 odd years! Wink )

Hang in there, don't shop in desperation and grab a nice SSB unit when you can.

All the best,
Victor

I have a CRT SS9900, and though I’m not an expert, I would warmly recommend this for SSB use.
You can use a clarifier, your choice, both on Tx and Rx or one of them or autocentered.
The radio can display the SWR or the voltage consumption after each transmission.
You can set it as a repeater even.
You can smoothly dial a frequency without channel increments, or switch to channels on the click of a button.
You can scan channels and frequencies.
You have a good number of 40 channel banks where you can define the exact frequency of each channel without menu diving, just choosing it and it stays memorized. Like this, you can have, let’s say, UK 40 channels on A bank and European 40 channels on B. Etc..
Also, the clarifier is smooth, not incremented.
You also have 6 memory frequencies that also memorize your noise or band filter or modulation mode for each.
And I don’t even know the radio too well yet…
Also you have smooth transmitting power dial, if the amperage of your power supply fails you, you just turn down the Tx Watts with this dial…
Cheers

Another vote for the SS9900, it has a few quirks that made it slightly annoying to use compared with the 6900N. You can't change by frequency without messing up your channels, by using a memory slot you are able to change the frequency without issues, takes a little getting used to, it does become much easier with practice.
