Hi All,
I thought I would share a few pictures and a brief overview of my recent activation of Kinder Scout SP-001.
It was more of a hiking trip with a side of radio than a radio trip so I opted to use a cut-down kit consisting of just my handie and a simple slim jim antenna and pole. I usually use an RH-770 telescopic antenna for activating when hiking with my XYL. However, due to the conditions looking particularly blowy on the summit, I opted for the pole to allow me to take shelter.
The summit of Kinder Scout is officially 636m ASL and there is usually a good amount of traffic on VHF so I was confident that I could get the required contact with the simple setup I was using. The summit itself is featureless and pretty exposed. This is the third time I have activated Kinder and I highly recommend moving to the nearby Kinder Low before activating. It is only 3 meters lower, so it is comfortably within the activation zone and has a number of large, rocky outcrops which provide some shelter if the weather is less than optimal.
We hiked about 9 miles in total. Starting and finishing the walk in Hayfield, ascending on the William Clough trail.
We were on the summit for about an hour including a lunch break and setting up and tearing down the station. I managed to get 14 contacts in the log, in spite of some challenging operating conditions. The summit was, as to be expected both wet and windy.
A few images from the walk. Looking back on the ascent, the trig point at Kinder low and looking back on the summit after the descent.
Thanks for reading.

Hi Pete, It's great to see someone who shares some of my interests - Ham Radio, QRP, SOTA/POTA, Walking/Hiking and Motorbikes (although it's a shame you like Suzukis, LOL).
Thanks for sharing your outing on here - I'm guessing it will inspire others to do something similar.
Kind regards,
Tom, M7MCQ www.m7mcq.com

Hi Tom, Thanks, yeah I think it is a good selction, nice to meet some others on the forum with similar interests. Be careful now though, I won't hear a bad word said about the old girl .PeteMadDogMcQ wrote:
