Hi Bev,

Working split frequency means that a station will be transmitting on one frequency and recieving on a different one. This can help the interference when a DX station has a pile up waiting to work it.

Good luck with your foundation studies.

Best 73 Gary.

Hi Bev, no you need a radio that supports the feature. Of course the same result could be achieved by using two radios. To be honest I've held my Ham licenses for ten years now and can only recall a handful of occasions where it's been used. It's really not very common.

Best 73 Gary.

FT450D supports split, uses both VF0s.

No, most radios will usually have a split function.  How it works will depend on the radio, but basically you either set an offset (Similar to a repeater), or you set the second VFO to the alternate frequency.  You listen as normal, and when you PTT, the radio will TX on the "other" frequency where the sending station is listening.
