Hi All
New on here so history about me.
I started with CB radios in my school days, back in 1980, in Sheffield, with the Callsign Black Panther.
I've had Rotel 220 and a 240, Colt 320FM , Shogun, Amstrad 901, Fidelity 2000, Shogun to name but a few!
I remember buying my first AM/SSB radios from Petrol stations and the back of cars.
I'd always wanted a CB from Steel City Truckers CB shop on Penistone Rd, Sheffield, but couldn't afford the prices at the time. It didn't stop me from going in and looking, though.
I lived on Lindsay Crescent, Parson Cross, Sheffield, with my parents at the time, and another CB enthusiast named GreenFlash lived in the maisonettes at the top of the street. He was about twice my age and only did SSB, which I thought was amazing. He had an Avanti Sigma 4 antenna on the roof of his top floor maisonette and kindly built me a centre-fed wire dipole across my garden.
That's when I got hooked on CB radio and, with my father's help, installed an Avanti Sigma 4 antenna.
That lasted about a week, as was stolen from the back garden.
After leaving school, I started my first job at Tyreservices GB on Hatfield House Lane. Within weeks, my boss had a GP27 and AM CB radio set up and was talking to trucks in the United States all day. It was an incredible year for tropospheric lifts.
On May 28, 2007, I passed my Foundation exam at the Sheffield Radio Club at 197 pub, near Sheffield University, and received the call sign M3LOX.
Years later, after leaving Sheffield and my wife, on January 24, 2019, I finally completed my Intermediate Exam at the Pie Hall at Denby Dale Radio Club and was issued the call sign 2E0LXY.
All of my CB radios had long gone by now, and I use an Icom IC-7300 HF with a 146ft ended long wire into a 9:1 balun for all bands 160m to 6m and Icom IC-9700 UHF/VHF/SHF with a triband colinear on the roof. I've also just bought a CTR SS9900 that I am currently busy programming up.
I haven't seen a lift like the one in 1982, but using FT8 Digital, usually on the 10m band and I've made contact with Australia quite a few times.
You can hear me on the repeater GB7SR slots 1 and 2 in Sheffield, GB3HU/HD, and on TG23530 Yorkshire Link.
No, it's not too long a post. It's just a typical radio amateur's ramblings!
Anyway, can I also request a CT callsign, please?
Many thanks
Daren
