'Best' antennas (especially mobile) can be a bit of a minefield there Dave.
I have a friend that runs an IC-706MKIIG setup in his van but he had to play around with several antennas and an ATU before getting it to how he likes it.
I believe he uses a dual band mobile antenna specifically for VHF/UHF directly to the VHF port and the HF goes to an LDG tuner (but could've been a mAT tuner as he likes to chop & change ) to another mag mounted HF antenna. I know, a two antenna setup but it gives him the best of both worlds.
That may be an option for you, a typical CB/10m antenna with ATU to start with and add a VHF/UHF dual bander when you get an IC-706 yourself?
I know my mate enjoys 2m/70cm whilst mobile (we often chat) and he parks himself up on high ground when he wants to do a bit of HF work.
I'm sure you'll figure out a setup for yourself Dave.
All the best, Victor

I didn't "correct" anything here Dave mate and you only have to ask our Alan Pilot regards my positive attitude when it comes to things like Dyslexia, etc.
(I think I've only ever 'corrected' posting titles for clarity or if someone has moaned about it. )
There's loads of options for when running mobile on HF frequencies from simple/cheap to complex/expensive solutions and up to you in the end. There was a guy I saw recently on a video that parks up, takes out his 9:1 Un-Un and throws the length of wire up the nearest tree. Only gonna work if you're parked up though!
I still think if you're going to get an IC-706 the dual antenna option would be your best bet.
Either way, just make sure you have fun with it all.
73, Victor
