am hoping to move soon and with a garden, this wont be until the new year until mom is better. once vie passed my ticket or just for 11 meters I would like to know if I can still buy the pdl2 quad that was used in the 80s. I'm trying to keep my mind of mom at the moment just to give me something to think about.

I have only seen s/h ones for sale, not cheap but a cracking antenna from what I've heard. Worth a google and see if anyone is making them now. Hope your mum is better soon

For everyone arguing the toss claiming one vertical monopole antenna performs magically better than others....
Courtesy of someone who spends a lot of time modelling antennas on Worldwide DX Forum...
The main difference is at high take off angles with a 13dB difference between best and worst at 45 degrees, worth about 4 S points on a CB,so you could see a significant difference in performance for local contacts and very close by DX but at the low angles we want for the longest distance there's barely a S point difference between best and worst.

I agree with that.
As I understand it, the magic happens with both half wave dipole and 5/8 wave when more than a wavelength off the ground. My home brew 10m T2LT performs brilliantly on a 12m spiderbeam.
For anyone contemplating a 10/11m vertical, this video might help you understand the difference, which is negligable in terms of gain.
