Overdriven mic gain or you've got common mode RFI on the coax due to a lack of decent RF ground at the antenna and any RF choking on the coax going to it.

Did the station describe your audio, e.g. did it warble, or was it muffled etc? As well as the above suggestions, could be the PSU. If not enough power to drive it audio can warble.

What mic using? I know many people swap out the stock mic as it does seem a bit of a cheap afterthought by the manufacturer. I still use the stock one mostly, and whilst it's no studio mic, it's doing the job with no complaints. Have removed the foam insert, set the mic gain to 57, and talk a couple of inches from it.

Depending on the radio version you can set the talk back to to listen your mic. Not written in all versions of the manuals.. Long press on the function button then short presses of it until you see 'n09', use channel knob to adjust the talkback volume between 'off' and volume '63'. Hope that helps.

Sure this has been covered a few times but not under "HF Radios 0-30MHz" over in the "Multimode, Export and Sideband Radio" section.

Can't use a power mic on a 6900n. The modulation section needs to be opened up. I use a pre amp and a Frequency Equalizer.
