I have a neighbour who has recently dug out his old 80's CB, and rigged it up with an old magmount and areial he used to use on his van. He has mounted the areial on a scaffolding pole so it sits around 12 feet in the air.
Back in my CB days in the 80's you were lucky to get 5 miles out on a standard 4w 27MHz set up.
However recently my neighbour claims to have able to have had conversations with users as far north as Aberdeen, Eire, Spain,Italy, & Germany.
Is this likley ? or even possible ? Or is somebody yanking his chain. We are in South Derbyshire.

I mean it is possible with the right conditions, even with a rubbish 40ch FM radio with the right conditions you can get good distance.
Hell weekend just gone was mobile with my kernow beta 4100, not even parked on a hill and I managed to get a copy from mid Wales and had a conversation with someone.

It's not just possible at this time of year it's probable, we are in E-skip season and all of those places are very typical.

It does explain it far better than I could
With the right conditions radio waves can bounce and skip around the planet in all kinds of haphazard ways, sometimes predictably so. It's part of what can make radio such fun!
