Hi David,I’ve always keep a SWR metre inline and connected at all times. There’s no harm in it and if there’s any loss it’s minimal. It only takes a flick of a switch to check what you Antenna SWR is while going from band to band or channel to channel. And it will also let you know if there’s a problem somewhere along the line or with the Antenna. Most even have power/SWR so you can see what power your pushing out and adjust the rigs power accordingly. That was a bit long winded but I keep it connected permanently..

I must admit I have done the very same thing leaving a SWR/power meter in line constantly, it lets you see everything as performing as it should and should anything happen to your antennas or it's feed line you will know instantly and I have seen several others do the very same thing. Many of the modern radios have built in ones that offer a good guide at least, if you were out trying to DX QRP and attempting to minimise every little loss people take it out of line, I think the bottom line is its more of a personal preference and once your antenna is tuned, in theory at least, it shouldn't need constantly checked.
