I am trying to find a pair of mono headphones that are not closed, I need to hear the ambient noise as well as the radio, because my wife talks to me, (believe it or not ).

Have had a good look around for you Bernie and can only seem to find closed back in mono. Do stereo headphones play mono in both ears when used in a mono setup? There are adapters available to convert stereo to mono, could that be an option?

No it plays in one ear and is a bit annoying.
