Chaps,

Performance wise, do you think there is much between the Thunderpole Red Devil and the Sirio Performer 5000?  Knight's CB Radio state the Sirio 5000 beats the Wilson's best of the best? Love your views, anyway, I've hit the nuke button (something else I gotta hide from the missus) and hopefully be putting the two antennas to the test this week end ut still like to know what you think of the Sirios 4000 / 5000 range for mobile (static) use.

Thanks in advance!

Maybe a S point at best. It's about the same length as a Sirio 3000 and I've done a side by side comparison with a Sirio 3000 and a Sirio 5000. Signals that were S5 on the 3000 would be S6 on the 5000 and I forget the CB I was using at the time but it was the typical 80s/90s analogue meter. York JCB 863 comes to mind for some reason.

So the difference between the Sirio 4000 and 5000. Done that as well. The only differences are that the 5000 has a bit wider bandwidth below 2:1 due to the thicker whip and it has the hinge to tilt it over. From a transmit and recieve point of view they're identical.

Thanks NC for your comparisons, much appreciated. Yer, my first rig was the more basic York 861 with a DV27 and was a great little rig, that was bought as a Christmas present from Boots in 1981 of all places. Yes, even Boots sold rigs back then!

Good to know the bandwidth of the 5000 is possibly slightly wider than the Red Devil. 1:6 is the best I can get tuned at 27.555 at the moment, it struggles to get a 50 Ohm match, more like 39 Ohms but some decent coax might help, I might change it for some 213 or 303.

I've got the 3/8th version of the 5000 coming today and will try and do some comparisons. I know that 3 times the costs won't mean 3 times the range but like you say, if it opens up the bandwidth a little more and adds another S point that'll do me, the build quality of the Sirio looks quite good too.

How are you measuring that 39 Ohms? If you're using an antenna analyser and measuring the value of R where the antenna is resonant, where X=0, then you shouldn't be seeing 50 Ohms there unless you've some quite significant ground loss. The feedpoint impedance of a 1/4 wave ground plane over a perfect ground at resonance, where X=0, is 36.8 Ohms. Anything above that indicates ground losses so time to look at mounting and bonding - you'll never get 36.8 Ohms on 11m with a mobile install but it's possible on a car to get within an ohm or so of that if you bond all the horizontal metal you can so things like bonnet and hatch/bootlid. 50 Ohms is what you should see where the SWR is 1:1 and that frequency won't be the same as the resonant X=0 one, it'll be slightly higher.

Hi MV,

How did you get on with the comparison?

interested to know as I am looking at a mobile whip but like yourself, need a little knowledge from those that have waded the muddy water before me.

Graeme.

Simple rule of thumb is there's no substitution for wire in the air - the longer the radiating element is (the straight bit, not whatever is coiled up) the better it'll be on both transmit and receive. The higher you can place it on the vehicle the better it'll be.

I have the chance to buy a 2nd hand half price Sirio 4000, any ideas on this model?

Regards

Graeme.

Graeme.

Hi Red Fox, The 5000 tunes up pretty well, 1:2 on 27.555 so far on a quick comparison. Weather pending I'm finishing off my video on it this weekend. I've held off while waiting for a Polarising Filter for my camera to come from Amazon which came yesterday, trying to film the nanoVNA screen outdoors is near impossible unless you have one of these filters so my previous attempts I've binned due to poor quality.

But in-essence, the 5000 is looking good in terms of performance and build quality, however, don't under estimate the Red Devil, I don't think there is going to be that much in performance between the two apart from the wider tuning capabilities of the 5000

From what I've seen Graeme, the 4000 is a great antenna, if you can get 1/2 price it'll be a bargain

Back in the foxhunting days late 80s/early 90s for me i used mainly the modulator but my cousin had this red devil/red thunder basically a long coil modulator red Very Happy  Anyway the red thunder gave a stronger signal by about a 1lb over the modulator. So out of the old schools i would choose that one. quite reasonable price too.

Fast forward nearly 30 years and im using Sirio Megawatt 4000 fantastic antenna great build but it did break the copper winding(im yet to repair) So about 4 months ago i bought the sirio 5000 performer new and yet to use it as im only just about to refit in my van, but it looks very nice.

And to add to it for £30 off ebay just last week i bought the sirio 5000 turbo with sirio magmount in mint condition.

im expecting top quality results from these two aerials at least as good as the megawatt.

hopefully catch you on a network when i park up on them salisbury hills in the not to distant future.

73s good buddy
