Any views, experiences of buying a CB bundle (aka CB starter kit)? Seen a few suppliers and they look good value (ie cheap ), but are they really value for money or is a case of "buy cheap, buy twice"?

Hi peeteepee,I know the old saying goes that you get what you pay for nowadays,But those CB bundles are worth it if you look around and check the spec of the radio first.Midland do a CB Go I think it’s called with rig and Antenna to get you stared for about £99.I know it might not get you DXing around the world but you could always upgrade to another antenna at a later date. How many of the old school cb’ers started out with a 40 channel rig with a DV 27 on a biscuit tin and one of dads old car batteries..lol All I’m saying is check what’s in the CB deal and I’m sure there’s bargains to be had,Afterall not everything is cheap and cheerful and toot.. Hi Peter. A bundle might be best for you, or there may be better options. Do you have a main use in mind for it, e.g. just talking to locals, putting in a car for emergency, looking to try and work some long distance, or something else? A home based setup or mobile?
Knowing this will probably help steer members to advising further. If you have a bundle in mind then let us know and I am sure others will be able to give their opinions on the kit for the use you primarily want it for

Hello Pete,
The compromise in these bundles is usually the antenna. I would probably choose the individual items that suit your personal requirements. Do let us know if you have a particular bundle in mind.

Thanks for the replies guys, appreciate the feedback. In response to SangueG, I guess I'm looking to recreate happy memories of the 1980's driving around with my Amstrad and boot mounted K40 I'm also keen to set up a home base and with that in mind I'm going to do my Foundation licence, but in the meantime, get a CB rig so I can get on the air pretty much straight away. Once I've got my licence I'll look for something that will allow me to access the amateur bands from home.
As for Gary's comment, wise advice of course, it always comes down to a good antenna. I've seen some bundles from CBRadio.co.uk and also from Thunderpole and Knights. I like the latter's approach, in that you build your own bundle from specific items depending on budget, I guess. I'll be doing more research before I buy, but thanks for your advice so far. it's much appreciated.

1980's and now no comparison sorry to say. Where i live it was hard to fine an empty channel up to me going off air around 1994/5. Came back around 2 years ago and have never herd anyone on cb but i don't live in a big town. Go for the licence you get a lot of choice on hf along with 2m/70cm. Ask around to find out if you have many on cb round your location. Also post up what you are thinking of buying i am sure you will get some good advice if good or not.
