Subject: Foundation Exam - PASSED!!! Thu Nov 10, 2022 7:04 am
A proud moment for me and my Dad (26-CT-4652) - We completed our foundation exam yesterday evening at our local club and pass !!!
I’ve personally learned a lot in a short space of time, through my studying for the exam and I highly recommend it for any HAM that takes radio seriously.
I’ll be updating my call-sign ASAP.

Congratulations Mark to yourself and your Dad for passing the Foundation and becoming 'Hams'.
Always thrills me no end when I hear the news of someone passing their exams and their journey into Amateur Radio.
Enjoy those new frequencies available to you once those certificates come through and you get to choose your call signs.
All the best, Victor

Yes, echo Victor's congratulations to you both. Well done! Great to see clubs are still doing exams so people have the option if they don't want to do online.
Have fun with your new privileges, I am sure you will

Thanks to Chazwozza, Victor and SangueG for the congrats. I'm proud of Mark because he worked very hard for the exam and did very well. It was nice to do it at the club, and for us to be able to take it together in a friendly relaxed environment. Much better than using a lap top. We are both now looking forward to receiving our certificate and call sign. I would recommend anyone to join a club if they can. You will find all the members are friendly and wanting to help and encourage you.

Well done to both of you. With a bit of luck you might just get your certificate Friday/Saturday morning. After that comes it takes minutes to get your call on the Ofcom site.

Thanks Alan. We did it on paper so it's going to the RSGB by snail mail. It'll be about another week before we can get our call signs. But it'll be worth the wait.

Great to hear about your certificates and call signs there Mick, plus proudly displaying them on your CT profile.
Probably won't be long before someone says "Here, I can't find you on QRZ".

Thanks all for the congrats. I have just updated my profile with my call sign and QRZ profile. I have had a few successful QSOs on 2m and local repeaters so far. I am hoping to get onto HF very soon, but I will be testing for noise in my area first, before I take the plunge and buy a HF rig. Not long bought an MFJ-1622 antenna (I live on the 9th floor in a high-rise building ), so I hope this will be a step in the right direction. I’ve also purchased a NanoVNA to check SWR etc on any antennas I intend to use or make. Looking forward to making my fist home brew antenna soon, as well. Loving the world of Ham Radio!

Hi Mark,
Great to read as well as feel the excitement of your first steps into 'on the air' Amateur Radio!
Don't get too hooked up concerning QRM/Noise and just enjoy operating in any way you can. Also never take any notice to mentions of 'compromise' antennas either, I'm sure you'll do well with the MFJ and the NanoVNA will help immensely. (A three band Yagi beam would be a 'compromise' because it'd never fit in your living accommodations! )
I've worked the world with a bit of lawnmower lead as an antenna with FT8 digimodes so never say never!
I wish you all the very best and hope that excitement for radio stays with you forever.
73, Victor
