Subject: Mounting an aeriel to a fibre glass body Sun Apr 12, 2020 5:40 pm
Chaps
I was hoping to buy a little camper van this year (Corona permitting) which has a fibre glass body. No ladders or anything ‘substantial’ to fix to and doubtless a mag mount would not be suitable.
Don’t mind cutting the body but don’t really want to put it on the wing and much prefer to have it on the roof. Concern with that though is grounding Trying to do my research but not turning much up.
Anyone got any experience/ nuggets of wisdom?
Cheers All!

As mad as it sounds if you're using low power you could always use sheets of tinfoil on the underside of the roof if you were going to use a fixed body mount. Another alternative is to use lengths of wire fixed to the underside of the roof connected to the ground side of a body mount. To help rigidity you could go scrapyard hunting with an angle grinder and cut a bit of roof out a car which has the same profile as the camper van and bond that to the underside of the roof.

Genius! I’ll give the tin foil a try when the time comes since if it don’t work I’ve spent next to nothing. Might also consider a sheet of metal on the roof.
Appreciate the help!

I did the same thing on a boat I had years ago,,, use heavy grade foil with a K40, used to run 50wts AM with no probs,,, something you could look at are marine anntenas, they don't need a ground plane.
