Have just bought a icom 718 off a g7 member, hopefully that should get me up and ready for the end of the month... Can I use a silver rod for receiving no transmit until I get a long wire up

Yes you can indeed use a silver rod for RX , should hear very well on 10 and 12m but will be fairly deaf on say 40 and 80m
Enjoy

Nice one Chris!
Finally, you've got yourself a HF radio!
As Craig says it'll work for a start, I'm assuming you already have the silver rod installed?
For as long as I can remember all my radio listening days were accomplished with nothing more than the longest piece of wire I could muster and hang up. Couldn't be more simple, work well as a receiving antenna and hence that ubiquitous name of a 'long wire'.
Doesn't take much to turn those 'long wires' into transmitting antennas too.
Enjoy your new radio.
All the best, Victor

Yeah, you don't need a resonant antenna to receive, but you will do better with a long antenna for the low bands like 40-160m.
Is the ATU the iCom AH-4, or something else?

Absolute bargain at that price Chris!
They're great little radios and I'm surprised you got it for such a good price. Well done.
I know they don't have a built in antenna tuner but then most with such tuners usually can't accommodate a wide range often a 3:1 SWR difference and sometimes as low as 2.5:1. Pretty much means you need an antenna in the ball-park of resonance to start with! An external ATU makes all the difference but make sure you get a good one, (or even build one, they're simple enough once you find a variable capacitor or two ), otherwise you're limited to the same range. (Here come the arguments about to ATU or not ATU....)
The only 'complaint' I've ever heard about these radios is the old chestnut of how the speaker is small......Really?
Well done again and enjoy that radio

Ah, OK.
Excellent tuner - I had one, but have since upgraded to it's big brother, the AT-600 ProII, to handle the amp.

Good radio's. Hope you're only using Ham bands and / or 11mtr SSB as no FM for CB.
Paul.

That’s wasted money....far better to hide the purchase so there is no need to spend equally on the missus!

Yeah, divorce would be dearer than the radio....but she’s thankfully given ip asking how much I spend. She’s just mastered that “wtf have you bought now” look.....

That's an old one i haven't herd for years "living over the brush" lol. To be fair the station commander just say's "if you need it get it" but she doesn't have a clue where radio is concerned lol. I am out in the back so all parcels come through her but she never asks.
