Subject: les Wallen Modulator stainless steel whip length Tue Mar 09, 2021 3:21 pm
Hello all, a little help needed please, are there any owners of a original Wallen modulator who could measure the length of the stainless steel whip? this would require removing it from the coil base.
Many thanks
John

Cor, the old Modulator! As ubiquitous as the old DV27 and K40
Forgive me John, having a reminiscing moment....
Haven't got one anymore but from what I can find out the antenna's overall length was 1.65 metres, (whatever that means not being in farthings & inches!)
You could always cut a whip a bit longer than that and cut/grind it down until the SWR/antenna analyser shows it to be at resonant length. That might be better as the original was copied so many times with different lengths of coil that you'll never find the correct length otherwise.
Little tip - Use either cheap copper rod or brazing rods, (even copper wire will do the job), to find out the resonant length and then when you're sure cut down your stainless rod to matching length. Much cheaper wasting copper than stainless whips.
Let us know how you get on mate.
All the best, Victor

Thanks for your reply Victor, i should have stated i am not attempting construction of a new whip but i have several unidentified steel whips which i am trying to match to the wallen loading coil , you are of course quite correct, they are an iconic antenna up there with the k40 and dv 27 alike, the latter i believe is no longer made?
Cheers

Ah, no worries mate.
Maybe the 1.65 metre length helps? Or plug in each one in until it's resonant?
Best of luck.
