Hi John,
The Midland 203+ is a straight forward radio to hook up and use so hopefully this is a simple issue to resolve.
I'm a bit confused to your mention of BNC and 'male converters' presuming that you usually only need a coax cable with PL259 connectors on each end to connect the Midland SO239 antenna connection to the Sigma antenna SO239(?)
Have you measured SWR readings with a suitable meter?
If you don't have a meter set the radio to FM mode, Volume up and Squelch off and see if the radio gets quieter or louder on receive only when the antenna coax is connected to the radio as compared to disconnected. (It should be louder when connected but if it's quieter there may be a connection issue.)
Try the same in AM mode as well just to be sure.
Let's hope it's something that simple and nothing wrong with the radio.
I hope you get sorted.
All the best, Victor

Can you check the coax with a multimeter. You need both ends and check there is no short between the centre and outer at the plug. My money is on a short incorrectly fitted pl259,,, but i could be wrong.
