Subject: Diamond X50 on 70cm band Mon Dec 20, 2021 11:39 am
Hi
I have the X50 for 2m/70cm. It works fine on 2m but on 70cm I can't hear anyone. I have tried the band with others that I talk to regularly on 2m and theres a huge difference in the signal dropping from an S9 to S0. Has anyone else experienced this?
I am thinking of upgrading the X50 to the X200 or a moonraker triband antenna I have been given to try.
Any thoughts welcome.
Chris

What coax are you using? How long is it? Is the SWR OK? Can you hear anyone on PMR446? It's alright to upgrade your aerial of course but you need to make sure your setup is good for UHF and check if the X50 is working properly too. If it's faulty then best to change it anyway.

Thanks Wireless for your help I checked the SWR on another meter and its through the roof on 7ocm. I spoke to a lad who installs antennas and we checked it out on 7ocm and it looks like I have a fault with the antenna. The radio is a yaesu 991a.

Hi Wayne, Yeah X200 already ordered I had intended to change the antenna anyway but this just makes it sooner rather than later.
The lad is now on holiday till after the festive period so I will have to wait a bit. I could try the moonraker tri-bander mounted in the garden see how it works

Quick update, It would appear the X50 has a capacitor in it which is known to fail after so long. Can anyone confirm this? And if so is it possible to repair the antenna? Obviously I am going to replace the X50 but as a project if its possible to repair.

Search for "Diamond X50 capacitor fail" throws up a fair few hits

Mad isn't it? Capacitors inside aerials?
I did a double take when I was setting up my halo and there was a variable capacitor in it. Never known stuff like that before.

Its absolutely fascinating, Mind boggling at times though. I made a flower pot antenna for 2m and was very surprised it works. A simple design

The X50 has served me well I will be sorry to see it go it got me on the air when I passed my foundation along with the retevis rt95 radio. One must move with the times though I have a moonraker(no idea of model number)tri-bander to try but is it worth while as everyone says 6m is dead.
