Antenna for motorbike (NGP Antenna) ? Empty
PostSubject: Antenna for motorbike (NGP Antenna) ?   Antenna for motorbike (NGP Antenna) ? Icon_minitimeSat Apr 30, 2022 7:28 pm

I'm about to kit out my Vespa motorbike with a CB radio. I have a PNI HP Escort 6500 which I will be powering from a Lipo battery. Soldered on an XT60 connector to my CB radios power cable so I can hook up a Lipo battery for powering the radio.

My next hurdle is:

I plan to use a mirror mount with 3/8 thread  (screwed to back spare wheel rack of the bike) to mount the antenna. After some research, I find it recommends an Antenna which does not need a ground plane to ensure a good swr reading). So I therefore need a 3-4 foot antenna with 3/8 thread, with a NGP (non ground plane antenna) which isn't going to flap around on the motorbike which will offers a good range.

Anybody have any recommendations based upon above criteria ?

Thanks for reading. Look forward to any suggestions.

- Craig.

All antennas need something to work against, sometimes on a car it's electrically connected physically to use the metalwork of the car, sometimes it uses magnetism to connect to the metalwork, other times part of the coax radiates as a part of the design, or an identical physical antenna works against it as a ground plane.

I'm not familiar with what you're trying to do but it sounds like its and end fed design using a 49:1 connection, but also using a mirror mount suggests the bracket grounds the 3 to 4ft antenna to the bike, so the bike is acting as your ground plane.

3 to 4ft for an antenna also sounds like a base loaded extremely inefficient 11m whip.

A base loaded whip would be about 6 to 7ft tall, so twice as large as you need, therefore I can only think that you are connecting the antenna electrically through the bracket you mention.

How about a Pro Trucker 15" Tuneable CB Whip, its going to be inefficient anyway, and 15" is better than the 4ft Pro Trucker option if you're intent on not having something too whippy.

Here's your options, they all use a mirror mount 3/8", all tuneable,I'm sure you might be able just to source the antenna section rather than buy the full kits for the 15" and 4ft options.

15" Pro Trucker

4ft Pro Trucker

8ft 6ins Pro Trucker

Hi Craig,

Sounds like you've read the specs out for the "Sirio GL27 NGP" antenna. Wink

I've never used one so might be worth looking around for reviews, written, video or otherwise.

There's been plenty of people over a lot of time installing CB radios etc. to powered two wheel vehicles and hopefully some have documented their experiences on the old internet for others to enjoy.

I've seen everything from whips rattling around on a Vespa/Lambretta smacking the pillion on the head, (nowadays without the obligatory 'fox tail' tied to the end! Wink ), to full on SSB installations on touring bikes so it shows what's possible. I'm pretty sure someone on the Charlie Tango Facebook page has a full blown scooter setup who takes along a much bigger antenna for some hill top fun also.

Thanks nowadays to motorcycle training/communications etc. there's an abundance of helmet mics, speakers etc. which would be handy whilst on the move.

I hope you have a lot of fun with what you're doing as many have done before.

All the best,
Victor

The old DV-27 would work well on a biscuit tin so on the scooter i would think it would work.
This is the new type but about the same.

Had a DV-27 clamped on back rack of an original Honda Express (my embarrassing first motor vehicle). Anyone who remembers those will know there was not a lot to them, not much bigger than a push bike so not much metal, but it worked well enough.
