Anything built today will be much of a muchness really, the tape transports all come out of the same factory from what I read whether it's Denon through to unbranded supermarket jobs.  For what you'd spend on a decent quality (read- one with decent electronics and nice feel, and as far as electronics go less is more so cheaper units possibly better!) you'd be better served I think buying or salvaging an older quality unit and having it properly serviced.  Certain brands I'd avoid due to age-decaying plastics internally (Grundig, Thorn/EMI group for a start & IIRC Sharp and Aiwa have also been suffering badly.)

Hitachi kit seems to be aging better (I think they used a deck of Sanyo manufacture? Sanyo decks have also aged well from my experience) & I note you were attempting repair of a Hitachi unit so perhaps if that has served you well prior to this, it'd be worth spending the money on proper renovation. Not least because of the DIN-5 stipulation, as I'm not sure anything made today has anything other than RCA line level/3.5mm jack or optical.

Edit- just looked it up & the TRQ340 looks similar in layout to the Sanyo 2522 my mum used to have (and I broke as a kid! Sad )
