just throwing ideas about here i already have a mag mount and where i live there is no high buildings trees or anything else to get in the way so coupled to a ssb radio would it be any good or would i be as well to get a proper home antenna, plus i have a fiberglass marine antenna but i have been told it probably wouldnt work too well with a cb thanks

Hi Lionel,
A magmount antenna really is a compromise antenna and you'd be better off with a home base style antenna for more success with contacts.
Sure, on a car and driven to the top of the highest hill you can find a magmount will do alright and is a significantly easier method to raise the height of your antenna.....you can't move your house to the top of a hill so easily.
When propagation conditions or the 'skip' is good you can make DX contacts with even the most basic of antennas so imagine what could be achieved with a better antenna.
I've answered your marine antenna question in your posting about it elsewhere.
Hope that helps.
All the best, Victor

Hi Victor many years ago (mid eighties) i had gone out for the evening so my dad decided to have a go on my radio which at that time was the multimode 2 and the electronica special ant and the following day he said he had been talking to a guy in san francisco which if true is a fair way off

I don't doubt it Lionel and as I mentioned when conditions are up you can grab DX with the proverbial piece of wet string.
I think many are gearing up now though for this solar cycle seeing bigger antennas as well as beams being put up by members here and elsewhere from both Ham as well as CB operators.

I have the ML145 ?? Magmount with a Sirio 4000 ??. Not used it for some time now but it did work well when out and about up the local hill locally known as Holyhead mountain but it is a hill in my book. I have tried it at home just to test a radio but doesn't do much sat on a large BBQ. All down to the right tools for the job.

Just to add to the issue of the marine antenna. It won't just be an issue of not working very well it will present an incorrect load (not 50 Ohms) to the radio which will probably damage the radio itself.
