Hi everyone,
I’m Jack and I live just outside Perth in Scotland. I’ve found lots of videos on YouTube recently discussing CB radio and it spurred me to dig out my ancient radio from the attic. I got in to AM in 1980 when I was a student in Glasgow. I had a part time job and on a staff day out - a minibus trip to Dunoon - one of the lads brought along his rig and made lots of contacts there and back. I was hooked. I bought a cheap rig and moved to FM when it was legalised. I was a pretty regular user for the next few years as I did a lot of travelling with my job and had a rig in the car and one in my flat. I moved to Fife and later Dundee, before getting married and settling where I am now. I haven’t been on since about 1988 but thought I’d check it out again. My rig is still working but if there are contacts to be made round here I’ll be buying a modern rig and mounting a decent antenna. At the moment I have my old ground plane antenna in the attic and although I am not getting out very far, I can make contacts with mobile users on a nearby motorway. Hopefully I’ll find some contacts through this group. Anyway, that’s me - happy to take any advice as to equipment and anything else you think might help me.
All the best,
Jack.

Hi Jack,
Welcome to Charlie Tango.
Great Introduction there and good to read a little about your radio history. There's a lot of helpful members here who all seem only too willing to help so fire away any questions you may have on the forum.
Good to hear that you've been making contacts with mobile operators and your basic setup which must be a joy after all these years. Many here run SSB or sidebander setups nowadays with much larger antennas meaning they can grab contacts further afield and enjoy some DX action when propagation conditions allow. But then again you can do rather well if you run a mobile setup and sit yourself atop a big old hill.
If you ever want a call sign just make an official request and post it in the same forum section after checking out the instructions here :-
I wish you well, good to have you aboard and most of all enjoy your radio activities.
All the best, Victor

Thanks for the welcome Victor. I would like to apply for a call sign - can I do this in this thread or should I start a new one? Many thanks.

Welcome back to the hobby Jack! I will definitely recommend you use a rig with SSB as AM and FM modes seem to be fading, apart from locals who almost everyday at precisely 8PM gather on UK channel 32 FM. Also long distance DX adds to the fun.
I started again with the hobby in feb last year and I’m still at it with no intention of letting it go anytime soon.

Thanks for the welcome. I’ve plugged in my old box and, as you say, there doesn’t seem to be anyone on. Looks like an SSB radio is in my future . I also need to look at building an aerial for my loft, as the one I’ve got isn’t really going to get me far given the dip I now live in. Looking to getting back in to things.
