Subject: Fizzing sound . Tue Oct 10, 2023 1:10 pm
When talking/ transmitting I can hear a fizzing sound . My mic gain is set on default 30, not sure if this has anything to do with the fizzing sound ., also the black signal bars go a red colour ( the last bar) when transmitting.Â
Could anyone please advise? Many thanks.

I have the SWR switched on , on the radio which I as far as I know monitors the tuning of the antenna? Or do I need a separate SWR meter? Many thanks for replying.

What does the SWR read. What aerial is it and was it setup before you used it.

It's a silver rod half wave. I have changed radios . The old one was a T 200 from thunderpole which came as a package. I am now using a new ss9900 ham radio . The lcd is now displaying when I transmit SWRHI. I now have no signal at all . I am re - attaching the external SWR to try again..
I have a new coax cable ( noise reducing)..

The radio cuts out automatically if the SWR gets too high. (I think it has to be switched to this though. As yours must be hence swrhi and no transmit) Has one of the poles of your silver rod slipped down?
Check all your coax and connectors. And your aerial. It could be something like the coax rubbed through on something sharp. A loose connection, etc.

No such thing as noise reducing coax sorry to say. SWRHI is telling you the aerial is not tuned to a low enough SWR. Don't know the ss9900 myself and how to read the SWR with it. Unsure what to suggest but it is the SWR that is the problem or could even be a bad plug connection on the coax. If i was local to you i would come round and sort it out for you as it is hard to explain on here but i live a bit far away.

The antenna is all good, & the connections. I've reset the whole radio and have now got a signal back , thank goodness. Thank you for your help. Do I need to get an external SWR ? The ss9900 has one built in and is set to the on position.

Hi Pauline, I have an SS as well and it has the SWR protection. If there is an issue with the SWR, when you key, it will stop transmitting and say "SWRHI" on the display, this is to protect the radio. If you had this happen, you have an issue with your antenna, coax or plugs. When you say you reset the radio, what did you do?

I reset the radio via the internal menu. Â opt- reset. Also the lcd only displayed swrhi after I had connected an external swr meter. This may have relevence I'm not sure. Thank you for replying

Just a thought Pauline, did you set the SWR on the aerial for the 11 meter band and not the 10 or 12 ? Ie, did you take a reading of channel 1 and 40 on the Muppets CB band 27MHz ?

I thought the built in swr automatically adjusted that on the ss99. So no.

I've decided at this point, my best bet is to change the coax back to the original as I know there is nothing wrong with one, send the radio back and get another, that way I can eliminate its not the radio / coax cable.. I may have bitten off more than I can chew, but never mind its all a learning curve & I need to learn how to use the internal SWR. It would have been helpful if the instructions had a guide for this on the ss9900. I've only used an external SWR.

No keep the radio it is ok. What you have got mixed up with here is thinking the radio does the SWR setting but it doesn't do anything like that. It will read and show you the SWR but that is all. The SWR is set by adjusting the length of the aerial and the silver rod think you have is set by sliding one of the poles in or out and reading the SWR on the radio or external meter. Not looked but i would think you could find a video if you google on setting silver rod SWR.

Umm, my silver rod was already tuned , however I guess I need to re tune for the ss9900, as I had a T- 2000 running from the same ariel with no problems. I have re- set the radio. As after connecting an external SWR ( that's when the lcd read SWRHI) then I lost all signal.

Not sure how the SWR works on your radio. What i mean by that is it fully automatic or do you need to set it for/ref as you do with many external ones. Once an aerial SWR is set right then you can plug any radio in to it on the same band that is. Hopefully somebody will pickup on this thread who has the same radio. My radios are HF sets and have built in auto tuners that sort the SWR out at the press of a button. Anybody with the ss9900 out there with any help ????????.

I think I have sorted it out. I have just done another SWR & it reads just under the 1.5 mark, the radio seems to be good now. Thank you for all your help x

If I switch frequency from FM, UK channels to USB 27.5550, do I then need to do another SWR reading? I mostly use band A.

Now to solve the whirring, whizzing buzzing, I do expect some W, W, & buzzing , the weather isn't great ( raining) but the interference is overwhelming. So am thinking of maybe using my original coax to see if it makes a difference. One day I will look back on this experience and .
