Hi there.
Firstly apologies if this is the wrong forum .....
I have a friend who has just given me a radio and antenna that he used for work many years ago. He has no use for it now. He's not a Ham, he was in the security industry.
Can anyone tell me about it please? Is it usable, is it worth taking? is it indeed legal? can i use it for anything?
Any info welcome.
Thankyou..
Matt CT/X6657

Hello Matt. The Yaesu radio is for the amateur radio VHF{2METRE}70CMS bands FM mode of which you need a radio amateur licence of at least foundation level to transmit on it. the antenna is a mini mag mount for the same bands as the radio for the amateur bands.
If you are wanting to sell then £150 for both is possible.
hope that helps a little. none are usable as a CB radio.#73, Mark.

Hi Matt,
What a great gift from a friend Too many "friends" will happily sell you something 'cheap', takes a good friend to gift something
As Mark has rightly pointed out, it's a VHF/UHF radio, (144-146 / 430-440 MHz), the 'E' being the European model. I wouldn't be surprised if it's unlocked to the USA 'R' version, (144-148 / 430-450 MHz), or even further to allow your 'security' friend to have had a great base station for 446 work It has RX capabilities in the 108-520 / 700-999.99 MHZ range too, plus a host of other features.
It's not a CB, (er, durr! Hee!), but is a great rig for the budding radio amateur. It has a power output of 50w max but is easily switchable down to 10w for a foundation licence holder, (more than enough to open 2m/70cm repeaters in your area). Too many amateurs forgo the VHF/UHF spectrum in favour of HF operations, but a lot of fun can be had up there and the antennas are tiny in comparison to HF stuff
I'd keep hold of it Matt, will make a great rig for repeater work for when you pass your Foundation
Best of luck with your studies, get that pass then enjoy that rig!
All the best, Victor

Thanks Victor, great detail.
I have contacted my mate and told him the value of the rig in case he wasn't aware - He's not worried and wants me to have it - So boom! When i pass my foundation, I have my first Ham radio!
Thanks again to all who replied.
Matt.
