I just did a small QRM experiment at home.
My S-meter usually is around S2/S3 background, but later in the evening it can be S5 or even higher.
So I enlisted the wife to run around and turn on/off various lights in the house...
I found that some lights have S+0 but others have S+2 and combinations easily bring the the total over S5 or higher! What a nightmare
I guess my family will have to do everything in the dark this winter while I am QRV from home!!!

Hi Ian,
Well done on identifying some of your household QRM, always great to have a wife willing to help
I did the same some time back now, changed lights from the noisy ones and identified other issues. It's just the wife's hairdryer, the vacuum cleaner, the washing machines fast spin cycle and the bathroom extractor that are the main culprits now.
I could fork out for ferrites and try to 'cure' them but my wife is fantastic, she always notifies me of her intent to use any of the above devices and whether I will be on the radio or not.
Some moan about the 'station manager' or XYL.....I couldn't have a better one!
All the best, Victor

Good luck on eliminating all the qrm, Ian. Unfortunately it is the curse of working hf in the modern era.
