Hello all and looking for some considered thoughts on the 4m band ?
Reason for asking I've a 1/4 wave vertical coming this week , I already have TX/RX for 4m on my HF rig
What is the mode of choice? I think FM calling is 70.450? Not sure about SSB

Hi Craig,
Looking for a challenge
Bit of a quiet band on all accounts but gets busy once in a while and apparently some impressive tropospheric prop can be had. Pity I can't get on there and have a play! (Might have to dig around for an old Tait.)
As far as I'm aware the SSB Calling is on 70.200MHz and the FM calling is 70.260MHz after going through my notes. (My note taking isn't the best.)
The RSGB has the GB2RS News broadcast listed as 70.425MHz FM Simplex.
Just found this site if it helps and seems to confirm that :-

You'll have to let us know how you get on.
All the best, Victor

Fascinating....you guys get 4m, the yanks have 1.25m, and you both (I think) have 60m. We get none of them!

Damn greedy Hams, eh Jeff?
I think the ARRL turned down 4m applications a couple of times. As for 60m here in the UK it's for Full licence holders only. The last time I SWL'd 60m there were two ops exclaiming how 'nice' it was not being interfered by 'lesser' licenced operators!?!?
Lovely

Yep, get ‘em everywhere mate.
Over here, bands are very much by class.....for example:
Standard calls (UK Intermediate equivalent), don’t get: 630m, 160m, top end of 80m, 30m, 17m, 12m, only half of 6m, or 23cm and “above”.
F-calls (as we call foundation license holders) don’t get any of the above, or 20m.
There’s a proposal in for us to get a channelised 60m, but severely power limited due to it’s use by the military and others I believe. So might be good for local comms, but that’s about it....hardly worth building an antenna for.

Yep -70.450MHz is the recognised calling frequency for 4m FM. Recommendation is to move the conversation to another frequency once contact is established rather than continuing on 70.450.

Thanks Craig we are holding on keeping out of the way that dreaded covid. Still enjoying my radio time.
Here is the info on 4m here. Central Lancs Amateur Radio Club has an open net. Most afternoons see CQ-and-a-brew at half past two. On Tuesday, there’s an open net on 70.450MHz at 7.30pm. Contact Peter, G3UCA.
