I  made a wire dipole for the loft and it worked well when the propagation was good, the longest contact  was Christmas island 217DA/0 around 5 years ago. It will not be so good for local contacts though.

Think I better stick with my vertical silver rod for the time being..

For local contacts it will be several S points down to using a vertical antenna due to the 20dB loss just from cross polarisation.

Being in the loft it'll also suffer on DX as well a bit but the main problem is likely to be interference from electrical devices due to the antenna being so close to the sources. Tuning might be fun too given how much metal will be near it, things like water pipes and mains wiring both for sockets and lights - expect to possibly have to shorten it quite a bit.

Still if it's the only option you've got then it is what it is. If you've PVC guttering though you'd be better clipping the dipole to that as it'll be outside at least.

I use a "sort of" dipole (a horizontal 1/2-wave Double Bazooka) in my 1st-floor flat so its at about the same height as the loft in a house. It works very well for DX but its not so good for local contacts (20-30 miles is about the limit). The big advantage though is that it doesn't pick up much noise (QRM) because of it's horizontal polarisation. When I was using various types of 1/4-wave vertical antennas my noise level was between S7-S9 most of the time but now its only S3-S4.
